Run Reigate Half Marathon, Priory Park Reigate, Sun 18 Sept

w15-runreigate

Thousands of runners will descend on Priory Park in Reigate on Sunday for the third Run Reigate Half Marathon followed by the Fitness and Food Festival (including Muddy Surrey’s very own commercial manager Tracy!) There’s still time to sign up to the 13.1 miler, or the 10k run, if that’s more your distance. The kids’ race, is sold out though. Both the half and the 10k races are set over single lap routes through Surrey’s countryside and country lanes, starting and ending at Priory Park. All the roads are fully closed to traffic. Last year around 4,000 runners took part, so if this is not your cup of tea, I’d steer well clear as the road closures will certainly affect the surrounding roads. There’s plenty to do though, if you’re not taking part, with a bouncy castle, demos and activities organised by local sports clubs, and a barbecue by Reigate’s celebrity chef Tony Tobin.

w15-save-the-last-dance-for-me-woking-cmark-yeoman

Remember Antony Costa from boyband Blue? Yup, that’s him in the picture in his latest role as a US airman in Save the Last Dance For Me. Since Blue’s split in 2005, he has traded in the screaming teenage fans for the West End. Save the Last Dance is a feelgood story that follows two sisters through the summer of 1963. Lola Saunders and Elizabeth Carter also star, and there’s a full band. You’ll love it if you’re a fan of rock ‘n ‘roll classics.

w15-jane-crisp-new-ashgategallery

Jane is an artist who believes that functional objects can be elevated, in very simple ways to create heirlooms and longevity in the designs we live with every day. She amplifies these traditional values, in an innovative way using the simplification of processes, crafts and construction techniques to celebrate the simplicity of design that unifies form and function. Her work is at the New Ashgate Gallery until Nov 5.

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, at G Live, Guildford, Mon 19 – Wed 21 Sept

w15-buddyholly-glivec-johan-persson

This, quite obviously, is Buddy Holly’s story – from his meteoric rise to fame, to his final legendary performance at The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. It’s not new – 22 million people worldwide have already seen it, which to my mind means it must be pretty darned good. Expect a bit of ‘Shout’, ‘That’ll be the Day’, ‘Chantilly Lace’ and more.

Looking Into Wonderland, at the Kingston Museum, ends Sat 17 Sept

w15-lookingintowonderland-kingston

This is your last chance to catch this exhibition that showcases the fantastic, original illustrations to the famous children’s books; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Sir John Tenniel’s unique and imaginative illustrations were a major part of the book’s success and are widely considered to be the ‘definitive’ Alice imagery. The exhibition is accompanied with interactive activities for children.

Sue Perkins Live! In Spectacles, at G Live, Guildford, Thurs 15 Sept

W01-SuePerkins-GLive

Now that the beloved British Bake-Off is underway (and *ahem* causing quite stir) here is another chance to get more than your weekly dose of Sue Perkins. In fact, after this season we’ll be seeing less of her – Sue announced this week she wasn’t going to ‘go with the dough’ when the show moves to Channel 4. So even more reason to get along to her Live! show. It’s based on her best-selling memoir Spectacles and each ticket comes with a free copy of the book. Sue will be signing copies after the show. If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite Sue will also give an insider’s view on the real Mary Berry. Bring on the cake! Tickets are £25.50. Show starts at 7.30pm.

Cheryl, Mike and Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz, at the Harlequin Theatre, Redhill, Sept 16

W11-BucksFizz-Harlequin

They didn’t exactly nail it when they were thinking of a name for their show, but at least you know what you’re getting with ‘Cheryl, Mike and Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz’. The trio has been performing together since 2009 when Cheryl Baker and Mike Nolan joined back up with Jay Aston. They’ve been reliving their heyday from the Eighties when Bucks Fizz did the UK proud in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Adam Hess and Rhys James, at Cranleigh Arts Centre, Thurs 29 Sep

w15-adam-hess-rhys-james-cranleigh

According to The Guardian comedian Rhys James is ‘destined for great things’. They say he’s charismatic, clever and self-aware – sounds like a proper nice chap, and one to watch. Might be worth catching him now. He’s joined in this double bill by Adam Hess, who’s won awards for his comedy. My old mates at The Independent rate him pretty highly – and that’s good enough for me. Tickets: £13.20.

Dalloway, in the Mill Studio at Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, Thurs 22 & Fri 23 Sept

w15-dalloway-yat-millstudio22-23sept

A bit of a heads up on this as it’s only on for two nights – and it’s been betting excellent reviews. The Thurs show is already almost fully booked. Adapted from the novel by Virginia Woolf, it’s set in the 1920s after the war detailing a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway. Rebecca Vaughan in the title role, is said to be ‘simply sublime’.  Go people, go!

Michael Buble: Tour Stop 148, at Dorking Halls, Sun 25 Sep

w15-michaelbuble-dorking-bookamb_live_still_020-r4

No, sadly Micheal himself isn’t stopping off in Dorking. This is a film of his phenomenally successful sold out To Be Loved tour that went around the world. The film showcases live performances of the singer-songwriter’s biggest hits, including ‘Home’, ‘Haven’t Met You Yet’, ‘Cry Me A River’ and ‘Feelin’ Good’.  There is also new behind-the-scenes footage of Team Bublé bringing the show from arena to arena for two years. This must-see event includes a special 15 minute introduction with Michael Bublé.

Guildford Book Festival: Graham Norton, at G Live in Guildford, Tues 11 Oct

w15-grahamnorton-guildfordlitfest

I do love Graham. He’s brilliant on the telly as broadcaster and comedian. But did you know he’d written a novel? No, me either. It’s described as a surprising, compelling and a gripping read, weaving black humour, acutely observed characters and emotional clout. I can believe it, and it’s now on my reading list. Anyway, he’s coming to Guildford to talk about his novel as part of the Guildford Book Festival. Get in quick though, cos Grah’s a popular bloke, and I reckon he’ll book out pretty darned quickly. Tickets: £29.
