Muddy eats: The Cock Inn, Headley

17 Mar 2017

As pubs go, The Cock Inn in Headley is not a pub you’re likely to forget in a hurry. And I’m not referring only to its, um, suggestive name.

The name – no doubt about it – will raise a snigger. Go on you dirty lot, get it over with. But there’s a lot more to get you talking about it too, from it’s pretty rural location in the Surrey hills to the good solid pub grub they serve up.

Muddy Eats: The Fox Revived, Norwood Hill

16 Mar 2017

What’s that you say? Sorry I can’t hear you, my ear is still totally to the ground….

For yes, last week your intrepid guzzler sniffed the rumour, made the call and zipped on down to The Fox Revived in Norwood Hill, where the paint is barely dry on it’s newly renovated walls. I’m having a good run of beautifully-attired gastropubs at the mo, and The Fox Revived is another stunner.

You’re going to love what they’ve done with the place.

Muddy eats: The Retreat, Staines-upon-Thames

28 Feb 2017

We all need a little lift now and again – an eyebrow shape, a facial, that sparkly top we’re convinced won’t cling to our blobby bits. Pubs and restaurants are no different and The Retreat in Staines-upon-Thames has certainly had its vitamin infusion or possibly even a bit of Botox here and there. A makeover at the end of last year has given the pub a huge boost, and it was time for Muddy to check out its new curves.

Muddy eats: The Running Horses, Mickleham

14 Feb 2017

Yup, it’s pretty chilly at the mo, but if anything can lure me outside it is a scenic stroll with the promise of a warming gourmet pub lunch with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in a while. And it was on one of those gloriously clear, yet crisp, days that I discovered this perfect combo at The Running Horses in the pretty village of Mickleham.

Muddy eats: The Plough Inn, Coldharbour

1 Feb 2017

This week the Muddy Surrey team came down with a dreadful bout of lifestyle envy. It came about unexpectedly, but hit each of us with a powerful force. We had been to sample an out-of-the-way pub that had a long-standing reputation for being a lot less than brilliant.

That, of course, was before Becky and John Hopper took over and waved their magic wands. Okay, some heavy-duty building tools and a couple of paintbrushes may have also been waved around, but The Plough Inn, in the tiny village of Coldharbour, near Dorking, has been transformed and is now a glorious pub and B&B, with a barn for private venues and its own micro brewery. It’s gorgeous. And I wanna run it!

Muddy eats: The Rambler’s Rest, Coulsdon

25 Jan 2017

Tis true that Muddy has a terrible weakness for a cosy gastropub on a lazy Sunday afternoon. But I also have a my list of requirements. Good food and a wood-burning stove are at the top of my list. A rural location helps. And if the pub welcomes dogs, then even better.

The Rambler’s Rest, just outside Coulsdon, ticks all these boxes – and more. There’s also a stonking great garden which is a gorgeous sun trap in the summer, and the nearby Chipstead Valley and Banstead Woods for working up an appetite.

Muddy eats: Spring Tavern, Ewell

9 Jan 2017

If you read Muddy regularly you’ll know that I spend a lot of time reviewing pubs and have the waistband to prove it (just watch that baby strrrrrrretch). There are some places that immediately blow my mind, and I know that people will travel for miles and miles to get there – maybe the pub has a whopper garden, is in a stunning position, or the food is vastly superior.

But not every pub wants to be shimmying its tassels at customers, and there are plenty of pubs worth mentioning that have a more gentle allure.

Muddy eats: The Skimmington Castle, Reigate

26 Dec 2016

I’ve meant to tell you about this pub for several months (oops), so I’m excited to finally get around to it. Like many of the best pubs I come across, The Skimmington Castle is a little off the beaten track – in this case a mile or two outside Reigate and up a hill and round a few corners overlooking Reigate Common, so not a place you’re going to stumble over.

Muddy eats: Cucina Italiana, Oxted

19 Dec 2016

Muddy is lucky. Very lucky indeed. In our trips out to the finest eateries in this fair county, it would be easy to overlook those that had seemingly been around for years.

And you could be forgiven for thinking that Cucina Italiana in Oxted was so familiar to have always been there. It’s actually been open only a few years, moving in after a Chinese restaurant moved out. And in that time it’s developed one hell’va loyal following.
