The super facial
A super facial that reduces fine lines, wrinkles, scarring and redness? It sounds too good to be true - but the Dermapen Fractional Million Makeover ticks those boxes and more. Here's our review.
Superbly located in the centre of Dorking, this home based treatment room is a real find. Melissa runs her business Melissa Advanced Skin Therapy from her cottage just off the High Street. Parking is a doddle – the St Martin’s Walk carpark is a 5 minute walk.
The treatment room is upstairs at Melissa’s cottage. It’s light and bright and full of all the lotions and potions you’d expect to find in a beauty therapy room. Melissa has a lovely manner. She’s quietly spoken and exudes a calming quality. She’s a highly-experienced facialist and she really knows her stuff when it comes to skin care.
New on Melissa’s menu of treatments is the Dermapen Fractional Million Makeover, also known as the LA Lift, a microneedling facial that focuses on all the areas that show signs of ageing including the face, neck, decolletage and the backs of the hands.
This is a facial that’s all about technology. In a nutshell, a Dermapen is used to prick the skin thousands of times over to create a micro trauma, which sends the body into overdrive producing collagen and elastin – basically your BFF in the fight against ageing.
It’s incredibly effective at helping to combat fine lines and wrinkles, but is also brilliant at treating scarring and stretch marks. It’ll also do good things for hyperpigmentation and will help with rosacea.
I’ve had microneedling facials in the past, and while the results are phenomenal, the downtime was a major pain. The last time – a couple of years ago – I was red-faced for a good three or four days, which is not ideal really unless you can hibernate. But time has moved on, and so too has microneedling technology, and that’s where this Dermapen Fractional Million Makeover is excellent, because there’s hardly any red-faced downtime.
The treatment itself, is pretty quick too, which is great, because while it doesn’t hurt, this isn’t one of those facials where you lie back and waft into never-never land.
The procedure starts with a cleanse, followed by a micro exfoliant – and this is quite lovely. The products smelled gorgeous. Next, Melissa disinfects the skin and applies a serum – in my case the Antioxidant Cocktail. Then the microneedling starts. It feels like a sharp scratch, and isn’t painful at all.
The Dermapen pretty clever, and Melissa is highly experienced, so she can adjust the depth of the needles. They ranged from .25mm to 1mm on my skin depending on the area. Melissa says she can take it to 2.5mm for areas on the body where there’s more severe scaring.
After the facial Melissa applied the Über Pro Peel which is specifically designed to be used with a microneedling facial. The Über Pro Peel is full of amazing ingredients to help with everything from scarring, acne, hyperpigmentation, oil control, anti-ageing, cell repair and uneven tone.
You can expect to see results after just one treatment, but for the best results go four a course of three. I was thrilled with the results of my facial. After just one treatment, my skin looks and feels plumper around the eyes which means fine lines have been reduced. It’s also much clearer and a bit more glowy – like I’ve had a few really good night’s sleep.
A couple of things to know about this facial: you should avoid exercise after the facial the body can put its energy into rejuvenating the skin rather than healing the larger muscles of the body. You ideally want to avoid getting your face all sweaty too. Sunbathing is a massive no-no – so you’ll need to apply a good non-chemical sunscreen and stay out of the sun for a few days, and ideally avoid makeup for a day or so.
The Dermapen Fractional Million Makeover with the Über Pro Peel is from £240.
