Get muddy and lose inches

Fancy taking several inches off your body and a few years off your face while you're at it? Enter Jenny from Beautify salon in Caterham. She's your gal!

THE LOCATION

Do you think Surrey has more home-based beauty therapists than any other county? I do. And here’s another one – Beautify in Caterham-on-the-Hill. It’s been set up by Jenny Rennie, a beauty therapist with 15 years in the business. She’s owned salons in London, trained beauty therapists (and still does), and now has her own line of beauty products. But she missed the work as a hands-on beauty therapist, and so Beautify was born. The treatment room has been set up in a log cabin at the back of her garden, with entry via a side gate past her house.

THE VIBE

Jenny has set the cabin up beautifully. It’s a relaxing neutral space, with a treatment table, a shelf of products, dimmed lights, soft music. I always feel relaxed in home beauty rooms and I have to say that Jenny is particularly smiley and natural so I imagine she’ll put most people at ease.

THE MUD WRAP TREATMENT

I had the Universal Contour Wrap, which promises a minimum of six inches lost from the body. Celebrities swear by this treatment to get them red-carpet ready, and it’s also popular with brides who want to knock a few inches off before the big day.

The treatment involves being wrapped head-to-toe in bandages that have been soaked in mineral rich clay. There’s a knack to the wrapping – which aims to lift and shape your body, while the clay draws out toxins and excess water that’s stored between fat cells.

So, minutes after meeting the lovely Jenny I’m standing there in a tiny pair of paper knickers – and nothing else – while she wraps me up like a mummy. The bandages are warm, which was nice, but even in her heated treatment room they cooled quite quickly. Jenny then helps me into a thick plastic suit and I settle onto the treatment table where Jenny puts another blanket over me. And here I stay for an hour.

THE FACIAL TREATMENT

While the contour wrap is working its muddy miracles, Jenny gives me an anti-ageing facial. As someone who is constantly rushing around with barely enough time to scratch myself, I love that I can be losing inches from my body, while also taking years of my face.

Jenny used her own range of products for the facial and a special machine that delivers a low-level zap of micro-current to stimulate collagen production in your skin, for an anti-ageing effect. Basically the 32 muscles in your face are poked, prodded and given a kick up the arse to tone up. No needles, nothing invasive, no Botox just a natural (OK electric) boost.

This might not sound like the most relaxing way to spend an hour or two, but you’d be wrong – 0r maybe I’m just strange (that’s quite possible too!). But I was so relaxed on that treatment table, wrapped like a mummy and with my face being prodded that I drifted into that lovely zone of not-quite-asleep not-quite-awake. Ahhh. Bliss.

THE VERDICT

The Mud Wrap Treatment

The maker – Universal – guarantees an instant loss of 6 inches after your first treatment (or you’ll get your money back). The results are cumulative and three sessions are recommended for the best results. It sounds too good to be true, and the sceptical side of me would most certainly have put this treatment in the ‘gimmick’ basked had I not tried it.

I lost a total of seven inches – measured at various points from neck to ankle and added together – with the greatest lost on my tummy and just below my boobs. I felt firmer and flatter.

You’re not supposed to shower immediately after the bandages come off – and if you can, it’s best not to have a wash your whole body for a couple of days (maybe just a sponge bath) as the minerals from the mud will continue to work. You’re also supposed to avoid alcohol, coffee, fizzy drinks and fatty foods.

The facial

A couple of days after the facial, I got a couple of spots (grrr). But naughty spots aside, my face feels firmer and the lines feel much reduced. I forgot to take a picture post facial, but here’s one from a week later.

I looked about 100 when I went in so it’s like some kind of miracle. But if facials aren’t your bag and you like the sound of Jenny, she also offers the whole range of beauty treatments including eyebrow and eye tin and lift, massage treatments, manicures and pedicures, waxing and spray tanning.

HOW MUCH?

The Universal Contour Body wrap is £75 for a two-hour treatment (or £180 for a course of three); a 60 minute bespoke facial is £40.
