Conceived in the spring of 2014, Maison de Choup is the brainchild of George Hodgson, a young artist driven by the restless necessity to create, despite suffering from crippling anxiety that nearly ruined his life. The anxiety became so severe it prevented him from leaving the house, so he dropped out of education and found it difficult to face each day. A talented artist; with the help of his family, friends and his therapist, George gradually turned things around and had the idea of setting up an online fashion retail business which is how Maison de Choup was born. Today he works with a talented fashion designer and has a good support team and is quite open about his illness. We’re big advocates of talking about mental health issues here at Muddy Surrey, so we jumped at the chance to feature a product for such a worthy cause.

Initially born of frustration, MdC has evolved into a designer fashion label creating contemporary, limited edition, t-shirts and classic cotton shirts with sound ethics at the heart of everything they do.

And now that George has left the dark days behind, MdC hopes his success will inspire others who have been affected by mental health problems. Maison de Choup are best known for their ‘words fail me’ t-shirt which is an innovative word search design and sums up what many anxiety sufferers feel; 25 per cent of the proceeds from this t-shirt are being donated to the *YoungMinds charity, #wordsfailme.

Maison de Choup have also recently launched a range of five new, unisex, monochrome, graphic t-shirts with bold, distinctive designs – Linear, Flight, Masquerade, White Noise and Cognoscenti. Whatever they are worn with, they have a minimal, effortlessly chic look (although I suppose these two would make most things look effortlessly chic).

All the tees are made from ethically sourced 100 per cent organic ring-spun cotton which gives them a luxuriously soft feel. They are designed and made in London, cost £28 each and come packaged in stylish brown cardboard tubes making them perfect to give as presents.

So whether it’s a gift for a loved one, or a treat to yourself, they’re a great way to give something back while still looking decidedly cool (so much so, my 15-year-old tried to steal mine)!
