Top places to live in Surrey Albury

Rolling hills, pretty red brick cottages and fab local pubs - what more could you want from a Surrey village? Oh, a gin distillery and organic vineyard, you say? Done!

A bucolic village in the borough of Guildford and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Albury is as picturesque as it gets. Famed for its nearby wine and gin offerings, the village also has plenty to offer when it comes to food and community.

The William IV between Albury and Shere offers up top quality food, and has a killer drinks list too, with a wide choice of lagers, cider and local ale, a fab wine list and a spirits menu that can cater to any crazy cocktail request. The Drummond is a pub with a wide-reaching menu, from herb-crusted hake to black bean and hummus burgers. Just down the road is The Percy Arms, a pub and grill house serving modern British food with a unique South African twist, and don’t forget Mandira’s Kitchen, the award-winning Indian food delivery business that also offers cookery classes.

You’ve got your basics covered with The Albury Village Store. Head to the outskirts to visit the Silent Pool Distillers and sample some of the finest gin made on Surrey soil, and also explore its impressive shop to stock up on Christmas presents for the gin lover in your life (we all have one!)

You can’t think of Albury without thinking of wine! Albury Organic Vineyard is a small, family-run biodynamic vineyard conveniently positioned beside Silent Pool Distillers. The vineyard is open for visitors to taste and buy its wines on Saturdays from 11am – 4pm, selling wines by the glass with a side of English cheese and meat boards if you fancy.

If you’re feeling in need of a big serving of fresh air, head to Newlands Corner for a long Sunday walk. The 103-hectare nature reserve offers sweeping views of the famous Surrey Hills and is the perfect spot to walk off that roast.

Belmont School is a co-educational, day and weekly/flexible boarding school for children aged 3 to 16 years. It’s located not far from Albury in Holmbury St Mary, between Dorking and Guildford. There’s also Longacre School, a co-educational independent school for children aged 2 to 11.

The White Horse Inn is nearby in Shere which, in addition to serving up top-notch food, was one of the filming locations in everyone’s favourite Christmas movie, The Holiday (just me?). Albury Park is also where Four Weddings and A Funeral was filmed (everyone’s favourite Hugh Grant movie?!), so it’s quite the Hollywood hotspot!

Chilworth is the nearest train station to Albury. Hop on the train there and change at Guildford for a direct train into London, taking 54 minutes to 1 hour 12 minutes total journey time, depending on how long you have to change.
