Cool bar alert

Antlers on the wall, fairy lights galore and a wonderfully cool cocktail menu - we're loving this kitch and cool bar in the heart of Godalming.

THE ROSE AND CROWN BAR, GODALMING

THE LOWDOWN

I don’t come across many standalone bars in Surrey. Most also have a food offering, or try to be something to everyone, so it’s been fun to stumble upon the Rose and Crown in Godalming. This bar – said to be one of the oldest and smallest pubs in Godalming – has seen several reincarnations in its lifetime including butchers, bakers and candlestick maker. Okay, I may have made the last one up – but the other two are true. And now it’s a cool and classy bar!

It’s on Mill Lane, just a short jaunt from the High Street, and only a couple of hundred yards from Godalming Station – so handy if you want to pop in on your way home from work!

THE VIBE

Think Scandi cool. It’s simple and stylish with quirky flourishes. There are long-legged blonde timber tables with mis-matched stools and low mid-century chairs and pouffes. The windows are dressed in cute striped curtains with bunting and fairy lights, and there’s a wall that appears to be fur-lined but is actually papered in a very touchable print.

Curious touches like oversized gold feathers in kilner jars and stag heads above the fireplaces, accessorised with gold leaf shrugs and fairy lights give this place a cool, fun and unconventional vibe.

SCOFF & QUAFF

Ain’t no scoffing. It’s pretty much all about the quaffing. Although there is a small pizza menu – a choice of three 12-inch, stonebaked pizzas in either Margarita, Jamon or Etna. And there’s ice-cream, too. But it’s neither the ice-cream, nor the pizza, that brings people to the Rose and Crown.

There’s a to-die-for cocktail menu featuring bespoke house cocktails like the avalanche martini (who’s for passionfruit, chocolate orange and espresso?) and a white chocolate martini plus a range of regular and twisted G&Ts.

There’s a discerning wine list too, which includes some of our favourite local wines including a those from Denbies Wine Estate and the Albury Wine Estate both in Surrey. Mr M is a fan of craft beer, and there’s a choice of artisan ales and draught beer as well.

KID FRIENDLY?

This is a bar for the over 25s  – so, no, leave the little people at home.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: Catch up with friends, girls’ nights out, after-work drinkies, fun date nights, pre-dinner tipples, or getting your pals together for, well, any reason at all. It’s also available for private bookings – and in the warmer weather, there’s a fab Miami themed garden terrace.

Not for: The bar is open Wed to Sat, so if you’re looking for a drink on Sun, Mon or Tues, you’ll struggle.

The damage: Cocktails are between £7.90 and £8.50 and red, white, rose and sparkling wine is from £24 a bottle up to £50.
