Soho House, The Groucho Club, Annabel's. Pah. Who needs London when there's a perfectly suave private members' club here.
Channelling a smooth Soho House and Shoreditch House vibe, the Main House in Guildford is the destination for a modern urban working. It’s a space where Surrey’s creative community can come together to wine, dine, drink coffee and exchange ideas.
Located down a little alleyway off the High Street in Guildford, with a keycode to get you through the front door, the Main House is a cool and elegant hideaway, that’s also right in the centre of town. It’s open Tues through to Fri from 9am to 3pm, and is available to members of The Inspiration Space, a business network for start-ups and professionals in Surrey. By night, the Main House becomes Tudor Antiques a late-night speakeasy that serves a mean cocktail, often in a teapot.
There’s very much a bohemian arty vibe to the place – think 1920s glamour with a touch of quirky cool. The building itself dates back to the 1600s and is chock full of character – timber beams, open fireplaces, oak flooring.
There are several different spaces, so if you’re looking for a quiet corner you’ll find it here. Likewise if you’re after somewhere to hold a meeting, there’s a space for that too in a separate meeting room. But, if you want to surround yourself with likeminded creative professionals, base yourself in the main bar area. It’s perfect, really, for collaborative working, client meetings and informal entertaining.
Soft drinks and coffees are available at the bar, or something a bit stronger if that’s your tipple. And food can be ordered in and delivered from the nearby Kalm Cafe.
While the Main House is a private club for Inspiration Space Club members, monthly passes for Main House membership are also available for £58. Club membership is a new 12-month mentoring programme for start-ups and scale ups looking for strategic advice, creative coaching and 1:1 mentoring. The cost is £85 a month.
THE MUDDY VERDICT
Good for: Creatives, entrepreneurs, start-ups, work-from-homers. Anyone who’s a bit cool and quirky. Those looking to share ideas and meet likeminded peeps.
Not for: Traditional types looking for a straight edged office space.
