12 veggie-friendly hotspots in Surrey

Vegetarians unite! Got the munchies and not sure where to go? Muddy has your back with our guide to the best vegetarian eateries in Surrey.

Whether you’re a dedicated vegetarian, vegan or simply just love freshly-cooked meat-free meals, we’re celebrating National Vegetarian Week (13-19 May) with our guide to the best places in Surrey for feel-good food, with quite literally, no beef…

We’d love to hear about your favourite veggie restaurants and cafes – add them in the comments below.

Crazy Bean Cafe, Great Bookham

A fully vegan licenced cafe offering up lunch, hot drinks and vegan cakes that are baked fresh every day. The team at Crazy Bean are passionate about exploring traditional flavour combinations using fresh vegan ingredients. The menu changes regularly, but includes things like crispy tofu wrap, a Sunday roast and a plant-based cheese burger.

Dastaan, Epsom

Indian food has long been a good option for not just veggies, but also those who have a gluten-free diet. At Dastaan, run by two former head chefs at Mayfair’s Michelin-starred Gymkhana, you’re getting wow-factor Indian dining. There are plenty of veggie options to choose from including Channa Masala, Paneer Makhani and a Kumbh Palak with mushrooms and spinach.

Riverside Vegetaria, Kingston

It’s all in the name – and as well as fabulous veggie food you’ll also get a stunning riverside location. All dishes are homemade from fresh ingredients that are mostly organic, and as well as a veggie and vegan food, they cater to gluten and wheat-free diets. The menu is extensive and includes organic wines and beers.

La Barbe, Reigate

French food doesn’t usually bring to mind a strong vegetarian offering – but the small menus at this wonderful Gallic restaurant in Reigate has at both vegan and vegetarian options. Of course, the French classics like escargots and boeff bourgogne are still there, but it’s great they’re catering to the non meat-eaters among us. Read our review here.

Leftbank Restaurant, Egham

This family-friendly buffet at the Runnymede Hotel is a great option if you’re dining out with a group that has a range of dietary requirements.  The riverside location makes it a pretty place to be, and they’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s a good choice of vegetarian options, as well as meat and fish dishes. Read our review here.

V Cafe at the Institute, Guildford

They don’t get much newer than V Cafe, which has its official launch at The Guilford Institute this week. Those in the veggie know, may remember it as Beano Cafe, or more recently Delicious Dishes. Offering exclusively veggie fare, from fresh soups to homemade cakes, V Cafe is open Monday to Friday from 9am-3pm.

Cafe Mila, Godalming

A cafe that offers fresh veggie food as well as a yoga studio – it doesn’t get much more holistic than that. Food is mostly fresh vegetables and fruits and non-processed food. Think spinach and kale falafel, saffron and turmeric hummus, baked bananas, homemade granola and fresh salads. They also offer a range of sumptuous cakes, which includes gluten free, dairy free and vegan choices.

The Percy Arms, Chilworth

For a gastropub with strong South African influences – and a reputation for its excellent meaty menu – The Percy Arms has a brilliant vegetarian offering. Alongside the game you’ll find on the main menu, is a specialist vegan menu offering plenty of choices including Portobello mushroom stack, a coconut vegetable curry and baked gnocchi.

The Cock Inn, Headley

Another gastropub with great options for non-meat eaters. As well as vegetarian and vegan options on the main menu, the pub also has a specialist gluten free menu – so all dietary requirements are considered. I’ve got my eye on the wild mushroom, spinach and butterbean pie, or on a Sunday – the Mushroom, celeriac and lentil loaf. Read our review here.

Meejana, Weybridge

There’s an extensive menu at this authentic Lebanese restaurant in Weybridge, and plenty of the offerings are vegetarian or vegan. The most difficult thing will be narrowing down your choices! Luckily it’s mezze style so you can order several different dishes. The batinjan rahib (grilled eggplant salad) is excellent. Read our full review here.

The Barley Mow, Englefield Green

This charming pub sits right on the green in Englefield Green and just a stone’s throw from Great Winsdor Gardens. And while the menu is French-influenced and features plenty of meat and fish options, the vegetarian and dishes are imaginative and original. I can recommend the harissa-glazed aubergine with butternut squash. There’s also a specialist gluten free, dairy free and allergens menu. Read our full review here.

Seasons Cafes, Woking and Guildford

Offering up honest, wholesome and healthy food, the Muddy Award-winning Seasons Cafes – one at The Lightbox in Woking the other at the Guildford Cathedral – aren’t fully veggie, but there are enough options to keep any non-meat eater happy including a bean and beetroot salad, falafel wraps and sweet potato curry (which I can vouch for)! There’s also a good range of cakes. Read our Woking review, and our Guildford review.

Saffron Summer in Chessington has a special meat free Monday menu and is raising money for the Cash for Curry charity throughout National Vegetarian Week.

I’m surprised not to see them listed on here.

The Running Stream, 66 Weybourne Road, Farnham, GU9 9HE has a vegetarian and vegan section on their menu, serving meals that are different to the norm that is offered. Look at the menu on their Facebook page.
