Pubs & Inns

  • Great pubs with walks

May is national walking month, and with a long weekend and half-term holiday ahead of us we’ve selected 10 fantastic pubs with walks nearby

  • The Onlsow Arms

We’re whoppingly blessed with pubs around here and here’s another corker – we’re hard-pushed to fault this place at all!

  • Cock a doodle do

There’s plenty to crow about at the Cock Inn at Headley (hey, you at the back, no laughing)

  • A foxy revival

I’m having a good run of beautifully-attired pubs at the mo, and The Fox Revived, at Norwood Hill, is another stunner.

  • Top 10 cosy pubs to try this weekend

Wind and rain forecast for the weekend? Are you kidding me?! I thought spring was on her way, but winter’s definitely having one last say.

Nothing for it, then, but to dig out the ski socks, choose one of these super-cosy pubs to take refuge in (with great food of course) and order in a bottle of your fave Cab Sauv.

  • The Retreat

A recent makeover has given The Retreat a huge boost – and she’s lookin’ mighty fine!

    • The Running Horses

Yup, it’s pretty chilly at the mo, but if anything can lure me outside it is a scenic stroll with the promise of a warming gourmet pub lunch with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in a while. And it was on one of those gloriously clear, yet crisp, days that I discovered this perfect combo at The Running Horses in the pretty village of Mickleham.

    • The Plough Inn, Coldharbour

This week the Muddy Surrey team came down with a dreadful bout of lifestyle envy. It came about unexpectedly, but hit each of us with a powerful force. We had been to sample an out-of-the-way pub that had a long-standing reputation for being a lot less than brilliant.

That, of course, was before Becky and John Hopper took over and waved their magic wands. Okay, some heavy-duty building tools and a couple of paintbrushes may have also been waved around, but The Plough Inn, in the tiny village of Coldharbour, near Dorking, has been transformed and is now a glorious pub and B&B, with a barn for private venues and its own micro brewery. It’s gorgeous. And I wanna run it!

      • Muddy eats: The Rambler’s Rest, Coulsdon

Tis true that Muddy has a terrible weakness for a cosy gastropub on a lazy Sunday afternoon. But I also have a my list of requirements. Good food and a wood-burning stove are at the top of my list. A rural location helps. And if the pub welcomes dogs, then even better. The Rambler’s Rest, just outside […]

      • Muddy eats: Spring Tavern, Ewell

If you read Muddy regularly you’ll know that I spend a lot of time reviewing pubs and have the waistband to prove it (just watch that baby strrrrrrretch). There are some places that immediately blow my mind, and I know that people will travel for miles and miles to get there – maybe the pub […]
