A love of pre-loved
With the rampant consumerism of Black Friday behind us, here are seven reasons why we love to buy pre-loved clothing.
We all love a bargain. And if it’s a designer bargain we love it even more. And while the relentless consumer profligacy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday can’t be ignored, happily there’s also been a massive surge in the number of pre-loved shopping events popping up around the country – and most particularly in Surrey.
Clare Percival, the founder of Now It’s All About Me, a life coaching, decluttering and stylist service, started hosting pop-up Pre-loved sales in Redhill and Reigate just over a year ago as an additional service for her decluttering clients.
What started with an occasional pop-up has boomed, and she’s now hosting events on a regular monthly basis offering the latest in designer brands, hand selected high street items in a variety of sizing and all at low prices.
Want a pair of dashing gold Manolo sling-backs at a fraction of the original price? Of course you do. Clare is going to be your new BFF. And she’ll sort your wardrobe out too.
“I love to de-clutter lovely ladies’ wardrobes,” she says. “I come in, pull everything out and start again, weeding items out and recording items that need to go in. And from this Preloved was born. So the best bit is that my decluttering clients get to make some money.”
SEVEN REASONS TO SHOP PRE-LOVED
1. Unexpected treasures
At a pre-loved pop up, you never know what you might find. Unlike the rows of predictable fashion you’ll find in stores on the High Street – and then on everyone around you – there’s always a hidden treasure to be found. On the rails at the Now It’s All About Me Preloved Clothing events you’ll find anything from last season’s Asos party dresses to a silk Hugo Boss blouse.
2. Designer goods
If it’s brand names you’re after, pre-loved sales are your best friend. Clare says she frequently has designer shoes, handbags and clothing. And even better, sometimes they’ve still got their tags and have never even been worn!
3. Vintage finds
Pre-loved sales are the best place to find quality vintage clothing. And we’re talking real vintage clothing, not the vintage ‘style’ pieces you’ll find on the rails in the High Street. Looking for a vintage Vivienne Westwood jacket? You might just find it at one of the Now It’s All About Me Preloved Clothing events.
4. Thrill of the hunt
Nothing quite beats that feeling you get when you unearth a great find. And knowing you’ve paid a fraction of its original price only adds to that high.
5. Quality over quantity
Mostly, only the best quality clothes are offered for sale at pre-loved events. And these clothes will have been broken in already too. Practical and affordable.
6. Cost efficient
Your money goes much further when you buy pre-loved clothing, which means you can buy more of those quirky one-off finds. Or have more money in your wallet for other things. Win-win!
7. Save the planet
Buying pre-loved not only prolongs the life of quality garments, but it also means we’re sending less to landfill. And that’s a good thing. It also hopefully means that clothes manufacturers may be encouraged to produce less which will eventually reduce the carbon footprint of the fashion industry on our planet.
