Festivals fever

'Tis the season for drinking cider and getting sunburnt in a field. Here's our pick of the best local music festivals.

Who fancies getting their rocks off at a music festival? ‘Course you do! Our neck of the woods is offering an increasing number of summer celebrations. What’s more, unlike Glastonbury which sells out in seven seconds, these local music-gigs all still have some tickets available, at time of writing at least. So, whether it’s for all-round family fun or a groovy slice of foodie heaven, here’s where you’ll find Muddy decked out in daisy chains and denim hotpants this summer…

Camberley International Festival
■ Wed 20 – Sat 23 June ■ various venues in Camberley

The third Camberley International Festival returns with a brilliant line-up of events including comedy, film, dance, music and drama – including plenty of free events. The festival will feature performances by The Unthanks, Will Whisson, The Mysteries and Kodiak Island among others – and culminates in a carnival on Sat 24 June. Staycation Live Festival
■ Fri 3 Aug- Sun 5 August ■ Philips Memorial Park, Godalming

Set on the picturesque park, Staycation Live Festival brings a combination of different music genres ranging from folk to funk, electro swing to hip- hop – Music to suit everyone! The line- up includes Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer and Funk and soul and Electro DJ’s TST. There’s loads going on, including a kid’s zone, baby and toddler yoga, henna tattoos and willow twisting workshops. Green Table Foods will be bringing vegan cuisine and boast to provide the best burger you’ve ever tasted. Walton on Thames Beer Wine and Live Music Festival
■ Fri 6 July & Sat 7 July ■ Walton-on-Thames Cricket Club

Beer, wine and music all in one place… sounds like a good place to be. To get you grooving, Jafuso will be bringing funky disco beats and Ember Big Bang will be switching it up with their Jazz repertoire. Oxted Beer Festival
■ Fri 20 – Sun 22 July ■ Master Park, Oxted

This family friendly festival features more than 20 music acts across the three days, and more than 100 real ales, cider and craft beers. But this is not just a festival for connoisseurs of beer – there’s also a gin bar, cocktail bar and a Pimms and bubbles bar. Hersham Beer and Music Festival
■ Fri 6 July- Sun 8 July ■ Burwood Close, Hersham

This festival has pulled out all the stops with a line- up of big artists, DJ’s, and comedians, including Tinchy Strider, U2, and Stephen K Amos. Party in The Park
■ Sat 7 July ■ Woking Park

This year Party in the Park will be marking the celebration of the end of World War One and the victory won by women in achieving the right to vote. After the Armistice in 1918, The Woking News and Mail described how Woking threw a party across the town with parades, games music and tea. Weyfest
■ Fri 17 August – Sun 19 August ■ The Rural Life Centre, Farnham

Voted one of the UK’s top festivals by The Daily Telegraph, this fest boast’s a premium boutique- style, providing us with those services we really do appreciate when glamping – like posh toilets and Champaign bars. The Albury Music Festival
■ Sun 22 July ■ Albury Cricket Ground

Possibly Surrey’s best kept secret, this one-day music festival showcases talented local musicians, many of which play nationally and internationally. This year’s lineup includes Unsung Lilly, Amber TQ, Cassa Jackson and Colin Giffin among others. Entry is free. alburymusicfestival.com

Kew The Music
■ Tue 10 July – Sun 15 July ■ Kew Gardens

It’s a picnic concert so bring your blankets, folding chairs, food, booze and dancing shoes. Set in the gorgeous surroundings of Kew Gardens, the line- up is equally as pleasing and includes the Gypsy Kings, Boyzone, Jules Holland, Steps, The Human League and 2Cellos. South West Four
■ Sat 24 – Sun 25 Aug ■ Clapham Common, London

The world’s best electronic and dance music producers descend on South West London on the August Bank Holiday weekend. This year’s lineup includes Marshmello, Dizzee Rascal, Sigma, Galantis and Idris Elba. Tickets are selling fast for this fest, so be quick. southwestfour.com

Guildford Fringe Festival
■ Fri 29 June- Sun 29 July ■ Guildford

No matter how busy your schedule is, there’s no missing this festival as the Guildford summer festival spans throughout the whole of July. Taking place in venues dotted around Guildford town centre, there will be 125 events displayed, ranging from comedy and burlesque to workshops and cabarets. Guildford summer festival gives you the chance to see acts that are being taken up to the Edinburgh Fringe festival, at your doorstep. guildfordfringefestival.com

Henley Festival
■ Wed 11 – Sun 15 July ■ Henley-on-Thames, Oxon, 

Put your Daisy Dukes away, this is a strictly black tie affair. Well, it is Henley, darlings. This massive five day bash is chocka with live music, contemporary arts, comedy (Paul Merton, Mark Watson, Rob Brydon, Lucy Watson), street theatre and food glorious food, with 12 restaurants and nine bars. Rita Ora, Grace Jones, Nile Rodgers and The English National Opera are among the headliners, plus there’s the massively popular Family Sunday. Family tickets start at a reasonable £35 but this only allows you to wander around the event and hear the concerts. To see the floating concert stage you need to buy lawn (from £55 to £110) or grandstand (undercover) tickets from £70 to £130. henley-festival.co.uk

Imaginary kaleidoscopic realm, The Neverland, has been created for this festival, comprising three main stages, or ‘tribes’ each with a different theme and musical feel (pop, ambient or pumping beats). An eclectic boutique festival featuring music, theatre, comedy and walkabout performance that famously started in 16-year-old Lee Denny’s back garden! Woking Food and Drink Festival
■ Fri 31 Aug – Sun 2 Sept ■ Woking Town Centre

Labeled the Best Local Food Event in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and free entry to boot… say no more, this foodie is sold.  Woking will be dishing up three days of live cookery demonstrations served up by Surrey’s top culinary talents, as well as celebrity chefs. Cheese and Chili Festival

Godalming Food Festival

Sounds like your quite literally in for a treat with the Godalming food festival’s international theme. An adjustable waistband may have to be a necessity when there’s so many cuisines and tasters waiting to tempt you from all over the globe. godalmingfoodfestival.co.uk

Thread… a Festival of Textiles
■ Sat 30 June ■ Farnham Maltings

This place sounds like a crafters dream. Thread offers a place to buy handcrafted work, talks from the experts, participatory sessions and workshops, all under one roof. Why not learn how to upcycle at the reuse, remake, revolve talk, or book yourself onto a workshop and make your own sustainable leather espadrilles (no stilettos unfortunately!) craft.farnhammaltings.com
