Oi, you at the back – stop drooling over that Victoria sponge cake because I’m talking to you. Feast your eyes on these pretty little discs of joy that not only taste gorgeous, but are also gluten free.
These alfajores come from Just Because, a bijou business that produces a range of artisan South American treats right here in Surrey. They are little biscuits that are light and crumbly and come in a range of different flavours – and they’re perfect for weddings, christenings, birthdays and corporate events. Or, with a nice hot cup of hot coffee… just because!
You’ll find them in some of Surrey’s independent cafes, as well as at local farmers’ markets and food festivals. And they’re also available to order online.
Jennifer Munson-Montanez is the talent behind Just Because treats. She grew up in Venezuela making delicious South American treats with her mother and paternal grandmother, and when she moved away – aged in her 20s – she took her family’s recipes with her. Since then she’s been making indulgent treats for family and friends, experimenting with new flavours and adaptions along the way.
Just Because launched this year, and it’s Jen’s mission to introduce artisan alfajores and other South American Treats to the people of Surrey (and beyond!).
The alfajores are light, delicate and crumbly – and come in a range of flavours. I’ve sampled several flavours – purely in the interests of research – and would be hard-pressed to choose a favourite, although at a total push I’d have to say the original dulce de leche alfajores, filled with a caramel cream, are pretty hard to beat. Mr Muddy, though, loved the lemon and lime alfajores, and my kids were unanimous in their verdict, naming the nutella and pistachio alfajores as their fave.
I’d recommend the alfajores for special events – especially if you’re wanting to offer a delicious gluten free treat to your guests. They’d also make lovely gift – a more contemporary and unusual alternative to shortbread – and they’d also make brilliant wedding favours.
While the range of alfajores is undoubtably the signature range at Just Because, they also offer other South American treats including mini cachapas (sweet pancakes), tres leches fruit pots, cachitos and pastelitos (both Venezuelan pastries) which can also be to create a dessert bar or sweets buffet at a wedding or event.
