What new parents need
Buying for baby can be baffling. But a new baby service will tell you what you need. And what you don't.
I still remember everything about being pregnant with my first born. And the labour and birth are also firmly etched in my mind. (But let’s not go there.)
I’ve since had a second child, and they’re both now in the tween and teen years. And while I would never profess to be an expert on parenting or birthing, there are a couple of things I’ve now figured out that would have been handy to know then.
What I really needed was a fairy godmother to help with these things. Someone to advise on what to buy, what not to buy, do I need a doula, or not? And what about a maternity nurse and a night nanny?
Well, it turns out I may have met the very lady. And whilst it’s too late for me, I’m only too happy to share the love.
Aman Raithatha runs The Baby Service, a brilliant new concierge service in Chobham, near Woking, to help expectant parents prepare for baby’s arrival.
Aman set up The Baby Service after she fell pregnant with her own daughter Ava Madeline and discovered she had to travel to central London to find similar help.
Shopping for a new baby can be a baffling and disappointing experience. Emotions are high. Hopes are also high. Yet, it’s surprising how often the shop assistants know little more about the products than the parents to be and you arrive home with 20 brochures for a pram. And no pram!
The Baby Service provides a very personalised service – meeting expectant mums and dads and helping them suss out what they’ll need for baby’s arrival with the ultimate midwife-approved baby checklist. They’ll then source the goodies, deliver them, and even build them if you want. Importantly, they’ll also tell you what you don’t need to buy.
Aman is keen to dispel any ideas that a shopping consultant is an expensive luxury. “It’s okay to get help and enjoy your pregnancy,” she says. “It take away the stress of shopping for baby.”
And it may even save you money, because you’ll only buy what you actually need. Aman says The Baby Service not more expensive than a high street retailer, but what you get is a whole service.
The Baby Service works alongside local Independent Midwives, so can also recommend maternity nurses, night nannies, doulas and cleaners. And they also host workshops on things like early pregnancy, anti natal care and baby’s sleep.
The Baby Service is holding a three-day Christmas event from 9-11 December at their showroom, 1st Floor, 21 Burrow Hill Green, Chobham, Surrey GU24 8QP. thebabyservice.com
