You only get one chance to make a fantastic first impression – and that goes for property too. While it’s important to get the inside of your house right, most buyers will start making their decisions about your house within seconds of pulling up outside.
So by all means light those scented candles, but don’t forget what’s outside too. Property expert Sally Rule, director of Surrey-based Residential Property Search
, has been helping clients buy and sell houses for more than 30 years so she knows a thing or two about how shifting properties. Here are her tips for simple and affordable changes to make big differences in your first impression.
1. You want to be able to locate the property easily and does it present well? Can you see the number or name of the property clearly from the road or pavement?
2. If the homeowner enjoys living in their home and has invested in it, they will ensure the exterior is maintained and is kept in good order.
3. Is there space outside the house to park? Make a note of the other brands of cars parked on the street.
4. Are there are building works going on and skips outside? This is a good sign, as homeowners are investing in their properties
5. If there is a hedge or fence in front of the property, is it in good condition, and been recently cut?
6. Is the exterior paintwork peeling or is it in good order?
7. Do the neighbouring properties present well and are they maintained?
8. Can you walk up the path to the front door without being touched by plants? Is the pathway clear and without weeds?
9. Does the front door suit the shape and size of the house? Does it match the windows? Is the door furniture is clean and easily seen?
10. Is there enough light at the font door? Can people walk safely up the path to the front door and find the doorbell?
