Popping the cork… sparkling wine

It was only a matter of time before Muddy Stilettos moved from drinking wine to featuring it as a regular column. And while I could no doubt be considered an expert at the art of glugging, sadly it ends there (or sometimes with a fuzzy head the next morning.) But luckily for us we have award-winning wino Rupert Pritchett in our midst. Rupert, owner of Taurus Wines in Bramley, is a judge at both the prestigious International Wine Challenge and the Decanter Magazine Wine Awards, and for the last three years he’s been named as one of the top 50 ‘rising stars in the drinks industry’. So it’s fair to say he knows his Merlot from his Malbec. Each month he’ll tempt us with three tipples to sip, slurp or share. Cheers to that!

December – the month for sparkles and fizz if ever there was one! And if it’s something bubbly you’re after, why not try one of these super sparkling wines – perfect for parties or that little Christmas gift to self!

Hunter’s Miru Miru ‘Black Label’ Brut NV – Marlborough, New Zealand – £19.99

The little black dress of sparkling wines – this super smart bottle is the perfect go-to for any occasion. Made with the classic ‘champagne’ grapes and in the traditional method it really is a top sparkler from one of our favourite parts of the world – and one which needs all the support we can give them after the disastrous earthquakes in November. Miru Miru is the Maori word for ‘bubbles’ – and we think the toasty, white peach and lemon flavours of this wine will definitely lift any occasion!

Champagne Henri Mandois Brut NV – Pierry, France – £26.99

We love this champagne so much – it gets popped before almost every dinner party in the Pritchett house! It’s what we call a ‘grower’ champagne – ie not from one of the big names – but what it lacks in marketing budget it makes up for in quality and heritage. Claude Mandois is now the 9th generation of his family to make this toasty, brioche-flavoured champagne in their organic premier cru vineyards – and at £26.99 a bottle you get ‘grand marque’ taste for far fewer pennies.

Albury Vineyards Classic Cuvee – Surrey, England – £29.99

What could be more Muddy Stiletto than this glamorous bottle of fizz from the Surrey Hills? Made near Guildford, it’s got all the hallmarks of a great sparkler – and what’s better, buy a bottle now and you get a free voucher for a vineyard tour and tasting! So that’s Christmas drinkies and pressies sorted then!
