House swap: what does £250k get you?

Whether you're a first home buyer, a downsizer or looking for a holiday house - if you've got a spare £250k kicking around, here's what it'll get you throughout the UK.

Fancy living on a boat? This 23-metre Dutch Barge is moored in Chertsey and as well as a master bedroom suite, has a second bedroom with two berths and a bathroom with a full-sized bath. It is spacious – for a boat – and filled with light thanks to plenty of overhead hatches. There’s even a cleverly-designed home office nook. Aye aye captain.

Ramsgate might be the underdog next to artsy Margate and genteel Broadstairs, but if you want a pretty home by the coast there’s no denying this once-posh seaside town is is good value. Try this four-bedroom Victorian number on for size.

Pretty as a picture. This charming thatched cottage is in the peaceful country village of North Lopham, near Diss, so it’s all about location location location. There are three bedrooms, oodles of period features and a pretty cottage garden. Perfecto.

Named one of the best cities to live and work in, the humble town of Reading offers the best of all worlds. Countryside on your doorstep, London an easy commute away and itself a bit of a tech hub. Plus, there’s the brilliant Reading Festival each year (‘cept this one, of course!). This tidy two-bed terrace house is close to the railway station in the centre of town.

We’re going to the chapel and we’re gonna get… perhaps not married, but St Joseph’s Chapel in Langport, one of the smallest towns in England, is up for sale and it’s ripe for renovation. It used to form part of a convent, and includes the original chapel with vaulted ceiling, the apse, cry room and two confession rooms. And there’s also a private garden outside. Mother Teresa has worshipped here – and if that’s not great dinner party chat, I don’t know what is!

If you’ve always hankered after a place by the coast, this white-washed cottage in the pretty fishing village of Boscastle ought to do it. There are three bedrooms and views to die for out over the Jordan Valley. And it’s just a short walk to the harbour.

This cute as a button terrace is is in the pretty village of Sheepy Magna surrounded by unspoilt countryside. The house is in tip-top condition and oozes charm and history. Think exposed timber floorboards, fireplaces with checker-board tiled hearths, and timber panelled bathroom. There’s also a lovely courtyard garden.

Well hello there big boy! Sorry, guys, £250k does not get you this entire manor house in Leamington Spa. It does however, buy you a smart two bedroom apartment within this private gated development. It’s split over two levels and comes with it’s own parking place. The town centre is walking distance and you get shared use of the beautiful grounds. Low-maintenance living at its best.

Oozing character and charm, this terrace house within the Old School House is in the quaint village of Collingbourne Ducis several miles from Marlborough. There are two bedrooms – or one and a study – and a cute and compact courtyard with lovely views out towards St Andrew’s Church.

Oh la la… what do we have here? A pretty mid-terrace stone cottage that looks like it’s been around a hundred years or so, but was in fact built only four years ago. So you get period charm with new-build mod cons. There are tow bedrooms, and it faces out onto a lovely green in Chipping Norton.
