Where’s the best place to live in Surrey?

The Sunday Times has revealed its top spots to live in 2020 - but did your hometown make the cut?

It looks like we’ll all be spending plenty of time at home at the moment, so what better time to appreciate where you’re living (or, alternatively, start dreamily house-hunting on Rightmove)? The Sunday Times has just released its annual round-up of the best spots in the country to lay your hat – its Best Places to Live Guide 2020, takes into account house prices, air quality, good schools and access to green spaces, as well as community spirit – we can all use a spade load of that right now!

Altrincham in Greater Manchester took national top spot (pah!), but two our local towns – Farnham and Guildford – made it onto the the Best of the South East list. Bravo!

Guildford town centre

Farnham won major points for its top schools, sense of space and designer label charity shops. The Lion and Lamb Yard – the lovely cobbled street – got a shout-out for it’s offering of jewellery, country clobber and homewares, as did new bookshop on the block, Blue Bear Bookshop, and Elphicks department store which has been around since 1881.

A little further up the A3, Guildford’s beautiful countryside, excellent commuting opps, choice of housing stock, great schools and fantastic range of shops sent it into the commended category. Cheese deli Partisan and wine merchant Corkage were given a shout out, and the range of independent food and drink emporiums were duly noted. The choice of shops from high street big hitters like Zara and Anthropologie, to the independent fashion boutiques also scored highly.

If you’re not in one of these two towns for the foreseeable (let’s not even guess what month we’ll be allowed our of own homes), take a look at who else made the cut.
