Where there’s smoke, there’s a barbecue. And the best way to prolong the summer is to do it the Aussie way and get out there with your spatula and tongs – and a good glass of plonk.
Over the next couple of weeks, before I huddle up in front of the woodburner and Strictly for the autumn, I’ll be out in the garden firing up the BBQ – and cracking open a bottle (ahem, or two!). But a bottle of what? Felicity and Rupert from Taurus Wines give us their suggestions for the best wines to drink with barbecued food… whatever the weather!
Best for meat
As the Argentinians say, ‘Malbec is for meat!’ – and who are we to disagree! This fruity, fulsome wine from South America goes brilliantly with everything from burgers to beef steaks – and its gentle spice notes will go well with a herby sausage or two, too. Try the Septima Malbec, £9.99 – the best Malbec you’ll find under a tenner.
Best for seafood
Enhance the delicate flavour of simply grilled prawns and shellfish with something crisp and white – or rosé. For a fun, easy-drinking wine that goes perfectly with prawns and other Mediterranean goodies, such as shellfish, white fish and halloumi try the glass-stoppered Maison Williams Chase Rosé, £32.99 magnum, £15.99 bottle.
Best for chicken
Finally, for the chicken skewers and veggie kebabs you can’t go wrong with an Italian Gavi. This crisp white really hits the spot on a summer’s eve, plus it has the body to stand up to tasty morsels from the BBQ. Try a real Gavi di Gavi, the superior wine from the Gavi area, such as Nuovo Quadro Gavi di Gavi, £11.99 – the hints of pear and citrus make it a real summer favourite.
