Acting up

The benefits of drama go way beyond preparing kids for celeb land - here are 7 reasons to get your child to stage school.

If you think drama classes are just for kids with dreams of stardom, think again. The benefits of the performing arts go way beyond preparing kids for a life in celeb land  – from improvement in communication skills to building confidence. Lauren Jones, principal at Jigsaw performing arts school in Surbiton gives us these 7 reasons why you should enrol your child in performing arts classes.

1. Social skills
Starting at any age children who perform together, really bond and become more comfortable meeting new people.
2. Confidence
When you have PA lessons, you can access the skills you’ve learnt to boost your confidence, whether you need to deliver a speech, make someone laugh (laugh at yourself), find it easier to try new things.
3. Exercise
Coming to PA classes means, at least once a week that child will be doing a full hour of dance, and increasing their strength, flexibility and overall fitness. This is without the movements that go with the song or drama piece.
4. Memory
In all subjects of the PA children develop ways to improve their memory; learning lines, lyrics and movements, who speaks before you, when do you have to go where on the stage, where you light is. These tactics are easily transferred into everyday life.

5. Creativity
Working with lots of different people with different ideas and new ways to work, move, produce performance, encourages children’s creativity and an open mind, not just in PA, but in all aspects of life.
6. Life skills
Through performing arts classes, children of all ages learn valuable life skills; listening to authority figures, working as a team, turning up on time, preparation, presentation (wearing appropriate outfits/uniform), and many more…
7. Stress relief
As children get older they can get stressed by school and their lives, but coming to Performing Arts classes, away from their usual surroundings, where they can forget their stresses, have fun, chat with other friends, become a different character, perform away their anxieties. All of this is really great for their mindfulness.
