October half term saviours

Not sure what to do with the little (and big) blighters this half term? Look no further. From light trails to theatre and activity camps, there’s loads of stuff on locally for kids of all ages.

It’s that time of year again where we don our spookiest outfits and stock up on sweets! Here’s what’s on this half term in Surrey to keep the whole family entertained.

EVENT: Ignite at Polesden Lacey
■ Polesden Lacey, Great Bookham ■ Fri 22 Oct – Sun 7 Nov
Set in the Edwardian Gardens of Polesden Lacey, Ignite is a new after-dark experience with a stunning display of lights, lanterns, fire and fantasy galore along an hour-long discovery trail. This is a spectacle not to be missed!

FESTIVAL: Secretts Pumpkin Week
■ RHS Garden Wisley, Woking ■ now until Sun 31 Oct
Celebrate all things pumpkin at Secretts Pumpkin Week where as well as picking your own you, there’s a fancy-dress competition and a pumpkin-themed menu including pumpkin curry, pumpkin soup and pumpkin cake, plus a BBQ. More than 35,000 pumpkin seeds were planted this year at Secretts, which will produce about 60,000 pumpkins. Bring along something to help you carry, drag or wheel your pumpkin from the field.

CAMPS: WildCats Holiday Camps
■ Caterham School and Sports Centre, Caterham ■ Mon 18 – Fri 29 Oct

WildCats offer a choice of fun camps for kids. The themed camps include woodland adventure, multi-activity, cricket, hockey, swimming and football camps, plus technology camps. After the long winter weeks inside these busy, friendly camps provide the chance to explore and develop new skills or old.

HALLOWEEN: Witches and Wizards Week
■ Bocketts Farm, Fetcham ■ Sat 23 – Sun 31 Oct
It’s a half term week and Halloween extravaganza! The right days of fun include reptile roadshows, slime shows, meet and greet owls, creepy craft corner, an adventure trail and so much more.

CAMPS: The Little Gym half term camps
■ The Little Gym, Chiddingford ■ Mon 25 – Sat 30 Oct

Let’s get active! The Little Gym offers a school holiday camps filled with movement, music, learning and laughter. Each week, progressively structured gym classes and a positive learning environment create opportunities for your child to try new things and build self-confidence, all with a grin that stretches from ear to ear!

CARNIVAL: Autumn Carnival
■ RHS Garden Wisley, Woking ■ Sat 23 – Sun 31 Oct
There is a mixed bag of exciting events and activities at Wisley this half term. Learn how the autumn season is celebrated around the world with hands on activities for all ages, including a garden trail. There’s even an autumn circus weekend on 23 and 24 October with a big top marquee and exciting performances!

EVENTS: Halloween Half Term Fun
■ Hever Castle, Edenbridge ■ Sat 23 – Sun 31 Oct
What better place to spend Halloween week than at a spooky castle steeped in history? Go dressed up in your spookiest outfit, spot Halloween decorations around the grounds and learn how to become a little monster in the Ghoul School Audio Trail. There is also the chance to plant garlic bulbs to keep those pesky vampires away in a free family-friendly workshop.

OUTDOOR FUN: Half Term at Godstone Farm
■ Godstone Farm ■ Sat 23 – Sun 31 Oct
Let’s get spooky! As part of Godstone Farm’s half term extravaganza, head on a ghost rangers trail, pumpkin painting, a mini horrid walk and meet and greets. At the weekend, take your little ones along to their first ever (not too loud!) fireworks shows and prepare for the amazement!

EVENT: London Bus Museum’s Transportfest
■ Brooklands Museum, Weybridge ■ Sun 24 Oct
Got a kid obsessed with anything that has wheels? This event will star a huge bus display from throughout the ages in addition to taxis, military and emergency vehicles. There will also be horse bus rides, heritage bus trips, a collectors’ market, live music and children’s attractions.

EVENTS: The Enchanted Woodland
■ Watts Gallery, near Guildford ■ Sun 24 – Sun 31 Oct
Enjoy creepy crafts in Watts Gallery’s enchanted Autumn woodland, book onto the Make Space and find the Golden Oak Leaves around the Artists’ Village!

THEATRE: Stiles and Drew’s Live Musical – The 3 Little Pigs
■ Dorking Halls ■ Mon 25 – Tue 26 Oct
Does your little one know the infamous story of the three little pigs? Join Bar, Bee and Q this October half term as they set off into the big wide world to build their three little houses out of hay, sticks and bricks – but will they escape Big Bad Wolf?

EVENTS: October Half Term at The Lightbox
■ The Lightbox, Woking ■ Tue 26 – Fri 29 Oct
The Lightbox is hosting some spooktacular Halloween workshops over half term, with a combination of drop-in family workshops and bookable activities for every age and crafting capability.The week starts with Potion Bottles for 5-7 year olds, when children will create a special Halloween themed potion bottle.

WORKSHOP: Creepy Comic Workshop
■ G Live, Guildford ■ Wed 27 Oct, 10am and 1.30pm
‘Tis the season to embrace ghouls and monsters! The perfect event for that keen drawer in your family, join illustrator Aaron Blecha for this interactive, Halloween-themed workshop where you’ll learn how to create your own characters and story.

THEATRE: The Smeds and the Smoos
■ Rose Theatre, Kingston ■ Wed 27 – Sun 31 Oct
Based on the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, this show heads to another planet far, far away where Smeds and Smoos can’t be friends. When a young Smed and Smoo fall in love and zoom off into space together, how will their families get them back?

INTERACTIVE: Lego Robotics

Lego lovers, unite! Learn how to build and programme Lego and Edison robots. These smart bots can be trained to follow light and sound, and even send messages!

THEATRE: How The Koala Learnt to Hug

Ten years after the publication of Steven Lee’s best-selling book, this on-stage musical adaption is back to remind us why nothing is better than a big hug!

SPORT: GoFest Active Multi-Sport Half Term Club

Aimed at those aged 5-13 years old, get that sports loving kiddo booked in for an active week of skills training and match play in a number of sports as well as general fitness, co-ordination and other fun activities. You can book in for individual days, too.
