Best summer holiday courses for kids

Organised what to do with your kids over the next 8 weeks? Oops! Never fear, Muddy has your back with our timely guide to the best kids' courses. Book em in pronto!

Some children have already broken up from school (gah!) and others are on the cusp of creating summer holiday mayhem. If you’re dazed and confused from dealing with them in half-term and wondering how the hell it’s suddenly July, relax – Muddy has your back with a whole host of kids courses across the region. Now where did I put that glass of wine?


Mavericks Day Camp
■ Woodmansterne Primary School, Banstead ■ Mon 23 July – Fri 31 Aug

cross between Swallows & Amazons and a Bear Grylls show, this sounds ideal for adventurous types, with camping, nature trails, orienteering, ball games, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, quad-biking and archery. And at £40 for a one day pass, £120 for three-days or £185 for a week there’s no reason not to get them off their screens and back to nature?

Dandelion Theatre Arts
■ Leatherhead Theatre, Leatherhead ■ Mon 30 July – Fri 17 Aug

Dandelion Theatre Arts is hosting three one-week workshops throughout the summer. They’re perfect for kids with a penchant for the performing arts and are aimed at kids of any age from 4 years and up. IOt’s from 9am-4pm Monday to Friday at a cost of £170, or kids can attend just the Thurs and fri for £65. A show will be put on for parents and friends on the Friday of each week at 4pm. Aladdin is the theme for the week starting Mon 30 July, School of Rock is for the week starting Mon 6 Aug and the final week from Mon 13 Aug it’s Trolls.

LCA Stage Academy

■ Soper Hall, Caterham ■ Mon 20 – Fri 24 Aug

A five-day summer workshop which will teach your little darlings singing, dancing and drama. Kids will learn sequences from several different musicals – and on the Friday of each week family and friends will be treated to a special performance. It’s aimed at kids aged 6 years to 18 years, and the workshops are Caterham and Oxted are different, so kids who are really keen can attend both!

Jigsaw Performing Arts
■ The Hollyfield School, Surbiton ■ Mon 13 – Fri 17 Aug

“Jigsaw at the Movies” is the theme for the summer holiday workshops at Jigsaw in Surbiton where kids aged 3-16 years can enjoy a week of singing, drama and dance. The workshops are open to kids aged 3-5 from 9.30-11.30am, and for kids 6-16 years it’s an all-dayer from 9am-3.30pm.

Flipside Summer Dance School
■  Cobham Village Hall, KT11 2LU ■  Mon 13 – Fri 17 Aug

Open to all dancers of all levels, the Flipside Summer Dance School will take your kids through a range of dance styles, including street dance / hip hop, jazz, lyrical, contemporary and commercial. On Friday, the kids will showcase what they’ve learned with a performance at 3pm in the new theatre at ACS International School, Cobham. The day starts at 8.45am each day and ends at 1.10pm for kids aged 5-8 and 4.30pm for kids aged 9-18. The costs £180 for kids aged 5-8 and £240 for those aged 9-18.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat: kids’ workshop
■ CYC:D, Haslemere ■ Tues 17 July

West End star Tilly Ford will host this two-hour workshop for kids aged 7-13 years. They’ll start with a warm-up, then learn a dance routine from the UK tour of Joseph. It’s from 1-3pm and the cost is £20 per child. To book email

Watts Academy: Watts Summer School
■ Watts Gallery Arts’ Village, Compton ■ Mon 23 – Fri 27 July

If you’re child is more into art than sport, this week-long workshops sounds really inspiring. Get a taster of art school with artist Becci Kenning – and explore sculpture, ceramics, photography and painting in a relaxed creative environment. Kids will end the week by curating an exhibition of their work for family and friends. It’s from 11am-4pm and aimed at kids aged 13-16. Cost is £225.

The Lightbox offer plenty of book-ahead workshops for kids during the summer holidays. On Tues 24 July there’s Illuminated Pictures for 8-11 year olds, and on Thurs 26 July it’s Shadow Puppet Theatre for kids aged 4-8. Both workshops are from 1.30-3pm. On Tues 14 Aug it’s 3D Printing Pens with Grace Du Prez, Flip Book Animations with the best-selling cartoonist and comic art teacher James Parsons is Tues 28 Aug Both offer two workshop times: 1-2.30pm for 8-11 years and 3-4.30pm for 12-16 years. For kids aged 4-8 years, there’s Paper Carousel on Thurs 16 Aug and Kaleidoscopes on Thurs 30 Aug from 1.30-3pm.

Acro dance moves and street dance workshop with Xavi
■ CYD:D, Haslemere ■ Thurs 26 July

Kids will learn some wicked “Acro Dance Moves” followed by a choreographed Street dance routine in this 90 minute workshop. Xavi will then take them through a street dance routine learning a number of styles of dance including Hip-Hop, Lockin’, Poppin’ and Basic Breakdance. At the end of the session, there will be a performance for parents. Cost is £20 per child. It’s on from 1pm-2.30pm. To book email

My Gym Summer Camp
■ My Gym, Wallington ■ Wed 25 July to Tues 28 Aug

If you’re after a couple of hours off from the kids each week, have a look at these drop-off summer camps at My Gym in Wallington. Kids will be entertained with themed games and crafts, swings, zip wire – and they get lunch, and goodies to take home! Parents can drop-off or stay and watch – and it’s fro 3-8 year olds. Each week there’s a different theme, starting with Moana on Wed 25 Jul (12pm to 2.30pm); Circus on Tue 31 Jul (12.25pm to 2.55pm); Sports on Wed 8 Aug (12pm to 2.30pm); Finding Nemo & Dory on Tue 14 Aug 14 (12.25pm to 2.55pm); Superheroes on Wed 22 Aug (12pm to 2.30pm) and Ninja Turtles on Tue 28 Aug (12.25pm to 2.55pm).

Learn Grow Create: Reception Ready workshops
■ Dorking ■ Tuesdays throughout the holidays

This summer club for kids aged 4-5 has will help build their confidence and have them ready for their first day at school. Sessions are for three hours from 10.30am-1.30pm on Tuesdays during the summer hols and focus on number and recognition, fine motor skills, phonics games, listening and memory games and social skills.
