All about Gok
The fashion guru hits the decks at Lingfield Park Racecourse later this month, as well as presenting the Best Dressed award to the most stylish lady of the day. Here's 10 things you may not have known about Gok...
TV fashionista Gok Wan spent years styling c’lebs, writing for some of the nations top fashion mags and helping women look good naked via his Channel 4 programme. Now he’s about to hit the DJ decks at Lingfield Park Racecourse for Ladies’ Evening on Sat 27 July. If you didn’t know the style guru was also a music maker, here’s everything you need to know about Gok.
1/ He is Leicester’s greatest fashion export. Kowkhyn Wan was born on 9 September, 1974 to an English mother and a Chinese father – one of three kids. His brother is a martial arts expert, and his sister is a childcare solicitor.
2/ Gok started out with dreams of being an actor. He studied at London’s prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama, but found himself drawn to hair and make-up over drama. And just like that a fashionista was born.
3/ But there’s a serious side to Gok too. He was overweight during his childhood and teenage years, and bullied for being tall, mixed race and gay. During his early 20s he lost 10 stone in a single year on a crash diet that involved eating as little as a teaspoon of honey a day. Since then he’s been involved in a documentary examining the issues around overweight children, called Too Fat Too Young, and hosted a series aimed at teens called Gok’s Teens: The Naked Truth, where he gave advice to teenagers about self-confidence, bullying, anxiety and eating disorders.
4/ Despite his acting career taking a turn towards fashion and style, he still treads the boards each year as a panto dame – playing the role of the Fairy Gokmother. Natch!
5/ As well as styling, Gok has also turned his hand to designing – releasing his his own women’s wear range via a collaboration with Sainsbury’s. His most sought after design was a red wrap dress that sold at a rate of one every 24 seconds.
6/ Gok last year became a cartoon character in the Channel 5 series Lui Bao Bei about a bright and spirited seven-year-old girl with a vivid imagination, who’s on a quest to understand the world around her. Gok’s voices the role of the girl’s father and uncle.
7/ Who is Gok’s ultimate fashion hero? It’s the supreme style maven herself – Ms Sarah Jessica Parker. And he’s not shy in admitting that one of his career highlights was when he met the Sex and the City girls when he was presenting from the red carpet at the London premiere of both SATC films.
8/ Gok is a lover of all things music – and as well as releasing a classical music compilation CD called Gok’s Divas, which reached number 1 in the classical compilation charts for four weeks, he DJs at festivals and clubs in the UK and Europe.
9/ Gok is a self-confessed glasses addict – admitting to having around 170 pairs. They’re a mixture of reading specs and sunglasses, new and vintage. He always has sunnies with him, because “you never know who might be looking at you!”
10/ He’s a regular on This Morning, and often hangs out with presenter Holly Willoughby. Now there’s a pair I’d like have a night on the tiles with. Gok says Hol “has a taste for hedonism” like he does. Don’t we all, Gok!
