Muddy meets Wonderbird Debbie Arnold

Actress Debbie Arnold - who is now starring in her own new online show Wonderbirds - shares her favourite hidden gems in Surrey and beyond.

A chance Zoom meet-up between four actress friends – including Surrey’s Debbie Arnold – on the eve of lockdown turned out to be so hilarious, the women decided to publish it online. And just like that Wonderbirds was born – the creation of actresses Debbie Arnold, Dee Anderson, Sherrie Hewson and Harriet Thorpe.

They roped in some of their celebrity mates, and in just 3 months the show has had over 1 million impressions on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. Paul O’Grady, Gok Wan, Denise Welch, Gaby Roslin and Linda Lusardi have made guest appearances, to name just a few. The concept is quite simple: they dial up, pour a large G&T and have a good ole chinwag. It’s unscripted, spontaneous and a real hoot.

Muddy grabbed five minutes with Debbie Arnold to find out about some of her favourite places in Surrey – and beyond.

My all time favourite restaurant has to be Joe Allens in London’s Covent Garden. I have been dining there since 1995 with Pauline Collins, Patti Brake, Julie Peasgood, Lesley Nicol, and Margo Hardiman – and I am proud to say there is now a table named after us, “The Golden Girls” table.  In Cobham, you can’t go wrong with the Ivy.  Extensive menu, outdoor space and love the fact you can always bump into friends

Without doubt, my favourite café is Fego in Cobham. You can see how good it is by the queue outside. I am really pleased that they managed to stay open throughout the whole of the COVID time.

I love going to the pub to meet up with friends and it also means I can bring my dogs. The Old Plough in Cobham, does amazing food, has great special boards and a good outdoor space too.

I don’t have a favourite fashion boutique, because for most of my life I’ve had someone from wardrobe choosing outfits for me. But in Cobham and Esher there are some great boutiques that I have picked up pieces in over the years.

I’m definitely not a shopping centre girl, so you probably won’t find me dashing around one of those. I have been doing up houses for as long as I can remember and I love to shop online, and find quirky bits and pieces.  I love having lots of photos around me of family so I am a sucker for a picture frame and have loads.

For me, the best day out is anywhere that I can be with my children and grandchildren. For my birthday this year they organised for a giant teepee to be in the garden. It was adorned with flowers and fairy lights and had a beautiful big bed.  We then watched my favourite move on a giant  open air cinema screen … with a glass of bubbles. It was perfect!

Favourite spa  I have been to spas over the years but I think it is important to stick with one specialist who knows your skin.   Izzy Jaffer Aesthetics ! is the Best facialist in the world. I’d travel a million miles to see her but I am lucky she is in Esher.

Wonderbirds is live on Facebook and YouTube every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4:30pm.
