The Victoria, Oxshott

Take a gorgeous historic pub in a pretty village, throw in a chef with top draw creds and a former head honcho at the Gordon Ramsay Group, and what do you get? Answer: The Victoria in Oxshott, Surrey's hottest new destination pub.

Weekend Escapes

The Victoria is the first pub under Matt Larcombe and Simon King’s new Igniting Hospitality. Matt was the former head chef and managing director at Heston Blumenthal’s The Crown in Bray, Berk, and Simon used to be the operations director for the Gordon Ramsay Group. They met when they both worked for Heston’s top team at The Fat Duck Group. So yeah, this is a pretty big deal.

The pair have come together to create a neighbourhood pub that’s at the heart of the local community. The vibe is friendly and laidback, and already it’s loved by locals popping in for a pint, with an excellent reputation for food that attracts destination diners.

The menus follow a traditional pub format with three-course options, as well as sharing boards and snacks. But this the food that gets people talking… causes a buzz. Grace Dent, The Guardian’s food critic, has given it the thumbs up, and The Sunday Times has noted it as one of the top places for Sunday lunch in the UK.

The menu includes classics like fish and chips, but there are also things like beer battered native oysters with seaweed mayonnaise and Wagyu bavette – so it’ll appeal to most. And there’s also a children’s menu.

Thought, too has been given to the wine list which is extensive. But alongside that, there’s also rare wine menu curated by sommelier Michael Engelmann, previously of The Modern in New York and Rockpool in Sydney. The cocktail list blends classic and signature cocktails and features seasonally driven, fresh and enticing ingredients which focuses on twisting the traditional.

The decor is traditional and deliciously  ‘pubby’ –  low beams, painted timber panelling, open fires and a higgledy-piggledy flow where several eating ‘areas’ kind of flow into each other, keeping the feel intimate and buzzy. The pub’s two private dining rooms accommodate six or eight people, seated around a large central table, and there’s also a luscious pub garden for soaking up the sun.
