Williams and Bunkell Fishmongers, Claygate

From boat to table in 24 hours, Williams and Bunkell Fishmongers, offer up a fantastic range of ethically sourced fresh fish and shellfish from their traditional fishmongers in the lovely village of Claygate.

When a shop has been around for 35 years, you know they’re doing something right.

Williams and Bunkell Fishmongers opened in Claygate back in 1989 – selling a wide range of fresh fish and shellfish.

Where possible all the fish and shellfish has been ethically sourced and line-caught from small independent fishing boats from around Britain.

As well as fresh fish and shellfish, they also sell a range of artisan goodies including homemade patés, dressed salmon and bespoke seafood platters.

Run by Matthew Clift – who first started working there as a 15-year-old schoolboy, and then took over from the original owners Messrs Williams and Bunkell – there’s not much that he and his experienced shop manager Mark Bean don’t know about fish and shellfish. And as well as advising on the best way to prepare and cook their produce, they’ve also got a few recipes up their sleeves too and they’re happy to share.

Oh, and they don’t believe in or support mass trawling of our seas – so you can buy you fish and seafood safe in the knowledge that it’s all sustainably sourced.
