Bottle rocket yoga
This version of Ashtanga yoga is the hottest new thing. And at Red Hot Yoga in Guilford, students are going mad for this new playful yoga practice.
Bottle Rocket what? It sounds more like a potent drink designed to leave you feeling more intoxicated than invigorated. But this version of Ashtanga yoga is really a thing. And at Red Hot Yoga in Guilford, yoga students are going mad for this new playful yoga practice. Muddy writer and yoga devotee Zoe Dudgeon tried it out.
I am a yoga enthusiast and have been practicing at least three times a week for the past two years. My normal regime is early-morning Ashtanga to get myself centred before a busy day at work. However, I like to experiment with my practice, so when the new Bottle Rocket class at Red Hot Yoga came across my radar I was quite intrigued. I donned my yoga kit and headed down to the studio to add some more tricks to my downward dog.
The Bottle Rocket practice is based on a combination of Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow – meaning you really can get the best of both worlds. Whilst traditional Ashtanga is very much focused on form and creating the perfect posture, Bottle Rocket allows for some more playful movement. It’s like Ashtanga’s cool hippy sister!
Taught by Jane Beevers, who originally trained in classical ballet at the Royal Academy of Dancing, the class incorporated a sequence of sun salutations before Jane led us into some more complicated postures. Everyone was encouraged to try an inversion; we focused on a dolphin pose and classic headstands. I do enjoy an inversion: sometimes the world just makes more sense when you’re upside down! Jane was there to support those who weren’t as experienced or confident in the poses, which means you could achieve things you didn’t know you were capable of. It is a safe space to experiment.
The latter part of the class involved some core strengthening exercises; minutiae movements that really make you feel the burn. And of course you are rewarded at the end of the session with some mediation and relaxation in shivasanya (aka. lying on your mat with your eyes closed and trying not to drift off to sleep – although I’m sure the lovely team and Red Hot Yoga would not object!).
At the end of the session Jane was kind enough to spend a little extra time with me. She wowed me with an arm balance I have always wanted to try (eka pada koundinyasana – see me below) and told me I was more than capable of it myself. Despite having failed to nail the pose when practicing solo, under Jane’s guidance I was able to fly off the ground and achieve it. It was a really exhilarating moment and I was buzzing for the rest of the day. I came away from the class feeling invigorated, playful and creative. And I will definitely be adding Bottle Rocket to my weekly practice.
