Raise your glasses ladies and gents to meet the Muddy Awards Surrey winners of 2019.

That’s it people. The Muddy Awards have come a glorious end after another fast, frantic and terribly exciting finish.

Thank you so very much to all the many thousands of you who supported the brilliant indie businesses across Surrey, and thank you also to the Finalists, all of whom would have made worthy winners. We really are so lucky to have such wonderful independent business in Surrey – and such supportive and loyal communities who get behind them. For that, I say we give a big cheer to everyone.

Right then, enough blathering on from me. WHO WON?

BEST ART GALLERY: Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village, Compton

This unique arts gallery and artists’ village is dedicated to the life of the Victorian-era artist GF Watts and his wife Mary. As well as a full programme of exhibitions, the Artists’ Village regularly hosts workshops, courses and talks. wattsgallery.org.uk

 

BEST BAR: Rose and Crown, Godalming

A relaxed and stylish cocktail bar bringing a bit of funk to the heart of Godalming offering cocktails, craft beer and a boutique wine list. There’s also a cool Miami-style garden, and on weekends the bar hosts DJ events. roseandcrownbar.co.uk

 

BEST BEAUTY SALON: The Beauty Nest, Chobham

Retaining the title of Best Beauty Salon for the second year running, The Beauty Nest offers luxury treatments including manis, pedis, facials, massage and waxing. There’s also a range of brow and lash treatments. thebeautynest.com

 

BEST BOOKSHOP: MIWK, Reigate

This book store in Bell Street, Reigate sells its own titles –  MIWK Publishing are specialists in film, TV, music and drama related books – as well as comics, graphic novels and classic science fiction, horror and fantasy fiction. miwkpublishing.com

 

BEST BOUTIQUE STAY: Beaverbrook, Leatherhead

Beaverbrook is a luxury country estate hotel surrounded by beautiful gardens in the Surrey Hills. As well as a spa, there are three restaurants and a cookery school plus 470 acres offering a range of outdoor activities for all ages. beaverbrook.co.uk

 

BEST CAFE: Basil and Blue, Chobham

This cafe is fairly new to Chobham – indeed it also won our Best Newcomer award – and offers up speciality coffee, a range of cakes plus sandwiches. It’s ideally placed for dog walks, and has a reputation for its fab service. Basil&BlueCafe

 

BEST CHILDREN’S BUSINESS: Mini Melton, Reigate

Unique, handmade and appliquéd children’s wear and accessories, designed and created in Reigate. There’s a great selection of designs for boys and girls from newborns up to age 13. minimelton.co.uk

 

BEST DAY SPA: BSpa at Brooklands Hotel, Weybridge

A tranquil and indulgent spa set within the stylish Brooklands Hotel. As well as state-of-the-art facilities including a hydrotherapy hot tub, sauna and stream rooms plus a sunlight therapy room, there’s a range of luxury treatments on offer. brooklandshotelsurrey.com

 

BEST FARMSHOP / DELI: Secretts of Milford, Milford

A long established farm and farm shop selling home-grown produce, local artisan products and imported fine foods. There’s also a cheese counter and deli, seasonal pick-your-own and regular family events. Secrett’s are four-time winners of this award. secretts.co.uk

 

BEST DESTINATION PUB: The White Horse, Hascombe

This gorgeous 16th century pub is in the village of Hascombe, near Godalming, and as well as a great menu and extensive wine list, there’s a wonderful garden. It’s also perfectly placed for local walks. whitehorsepub.net

 

BEST FAMILY ATTRACTION: Bocketts Farm, Leatherhead

This working farm near Leatherhead offers up plenty of family fun with play areas and loads of animals to see. It’s become well known for its pig race, and there are also pony rides, tractor rides and special events throughout the year. bockettsfarm.co.uk

 

BEST FITNESS INSTRUCTOR: Attila Kun, Dorking

Fitness trainer Attila Kun has scooped the prize for Best Fitness Instructor. Based in Dorking he offers a range of training options including guidance on nutrition. He also teaches karate. attilapersonaltraining.com

 

BEST FLORIST: Flowers by Rosie Orr

Rosie Orr has an impressive history with flowers, and throughout her career has provided arrangements for Vogue, Hardy Amies, Le Gavroche and Royal Weddings, among others. She’s also done the flowers for top telly shows like Downton Abbey and The Crown. rosieorr.co.uk

 

BEST LOCAL PRODUCER: Silent Pool Distillers

Based in Albury, you’ll no doubt be familiar with Silent Pool gin, but did know this Surrey distillery also produces vodka, whiskey and other spirits. They’ve retained the title of Best Local Producer the second year running. silentpooldistillers.com

 

BEST GIFT SHOP: Two Ducks, St John’s

This lovely gift shop in St John’s village, Woking, offers up an eclectic and unique range of quality handmade gifts from British and European designers. two-ducks.co.uk

 

BEST HAIR SALON: Sorella Hair and Beauty, Knaphill

Owned and run by sisters Lucy and Joanna, Sorella – which, by the way, means sister – offers hair cuts, colours and styling from a team of award-winning stylists at their friendly and relaxed salon in Knaphill. sorellasalon.co.uk

 

BEST INTERIORS STORE: Inside Chobham, Chobham

This lovely interiors store has been around for almost 30 years and as well as selling carpets, fabrics, wallpapers and blinds, is an Annie Sloan stockist. There’s also a range of vintage furniture and home accessories. insidechobham.com

 

BEST JEWELLERS: Simon Pure, Cranleigh

Simon Pure have been designing jewellery since 1986 – and as well as a workshop at Smithbrook Kilns near Cranleigh also has a showroom in Guildford. Both carry a range of beautifully crafted rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. simonpure.co.uk

 

BEST RESTAURANT: The Dining Room at the White Horse, Hascombe

The Dining Room is the fine dining restaurant at the White Horse pub in Hascombe, which you might recognise as winner of the Best Destination Pub. As well as a fine dining menu from Wed – Sat evenings, the Dining Room also hosts a monthly supper club. whitehorsepub.net

 

BEST THEATRE: Dorking Halls, Dorking

Hosting live theatre and comedy, film and exhibitions, Dorking Halls is striking Art Deco venue built in the 1930s. It’s won the Muddy Best Theatre award three out of four years. dorkinghalls.co.uk

 

BEST WOMEN’S BUSINESS: Two Ducks, St Johns

Hello again to Two Ducks – winner of Best Gift Store – which as well as offering up a gorgeous range of gifts, has recently expanded to include a carefully-curated choice of contemporary and chic high-quality fashion labels. two-ducks.co.uk

 

BEST YOGA / PILATES INSTRUCTOR: Zahir Akram, Weybridge

Zahir runs Akram Hot Yoga Studios at Addlestone alongside his wife Laura and a dedicated team. As well as teaching the classic Hatha style of yoga, Zahir also teaches part of the teacher training course offered by his studio. akramyoga.co.uk

 

BEST PHOTOGRAPHER: Sarah Olivia, Caterham

BEST NEWCOMER: Basil and Blue, Chobham

Winner of Best Cafe, Basil and Blue have also clinched the Best Newcomer Award in a category that attracted a lot of attention this year, and a high level of competition. They’ve only been opened for 18 months, but already have a loyal following. Basil&BlueCafe
