Caught on film
Tempted by a family photo session, but worried it may not be for you? So was I. But I took the plunge and I'm thrilled.
Ok, so here’s the thing. I’ve never had a family photo session. Nope, not ever. I’ve got some lovely shots of my kids from when they were young, but there are very few that feature the four of us, and even less with me in them.
What was I thinking? Why didn’t I shove my way into every pic when I was young, lithe and wrinkle-free?
Nonetheless, here I am, in my mid 40s – all saggy skin and double chin – with nary a good shot of me and my fam. I know, it’s really rather sad.
So before the saggy skin sags further and the double chin goes triple, I’ve grabbed the bull by the proverbial horns and commissioned a photographer to immortalise the Muddy Surrey clan.
I was quite particular about the kind of pictures I was after. Nothing too staged. Fairly relaxed – perhaps to include the hounds. And not in a studio setting (no powder blue backdrops, thank you very much).
I’ve been following the work of photographer Siân T on Instagram for some time, and love what she does. She has a wonderfully edgy, reportage style that I thought would suit our family. My eldest child is now a fully fledged teenager and the youngest almost 12, so our cutesy days are well and truly behind us.
Siân was brilliant. She was up for the challenge of capturing us, and we agreed to meet early one morning at Box Hill, near Dorking. Before the session, Siân offered some advice: wear muted tones, avoid bright pinks and oranges, but be comfortable in what you’re wearing.
I was a little nervous before the photoshoot – being in front of the camera is not my natural place. But the session was really relaxed – and I think it shows in the photos. We strolled around Box Hill, with Siân snapping away, and stopping us occasionally to get a particular shot.
The results are now in – and I’m thrilled. Siân has really captured our family as we are. She was fabulous with the teenage boy, making him feel comfortable in front of the camera – no easy task with a 14 year old.
And as for our daughter – who’s tall for her age and sometimes a little self-conscious – Siân had her posing for the camera like a supermodel.
Here are some of my favourites…
A family photo session with Sian is £65 for up to 3 people and you can add up to 2 additional people for £5 each. Pets go free! Sian also offers maternity shots, bump-to-baby packages, newborn packages, and creative portrait packages at her studio in Cranleigh. She also offers business photography.
