Six reasons to head to Tunsgate Quarter

The shackles are finally off, so grab your handbag, put on some make-up (if you can remember how) and head to Tunsgate Quarter in Guildford. See you there!

Going outside? IN PUBLIC? What’s that, then? Yes, we know it’s all a bit overwhelming and highly unusual, but the roadmap out of lockdown has decreed that we are now allowed to shop, eat and drink (while still using cautionary measures) so where better to do all three than at Tunsgate Quarter in Guildford?

1. Hit the shops

Loaf, Oka at Tunsgate

Non-essential retail is back on, so that means that thousands of shops are opening their doors for the first time this year. What do you fancy? If you’re feeling uninspired by your interiors and homewares, head to one of the fab stores at Tunsgate Quarter – Nespresso, Oka, The White Company, Design Vintage or Loaf. What you can’t find here, frankly, probably isn’t worth having. Or perhaps you’re planning your summer staycay and need to update your holiday wardrobe – SeaSalt is the spot to shop. And while you’re about it, grab your summer slingback in Clarks. Sorted!

2. Work up an appetite

GU1 Fitness Studio

Been a while since you hit the gym. We’re hearing ya! So we’re keen to get back on the treadmill – literally – and GU1 Fitness Studio has you covered for that. There’s a great choice of classes – from spin to boxing, yoga to weight training. The gym is open from 6am-9pm on Monday to Thursday, from 6am-8pm on Friday and from 8am-5pm on weekends.

3. Lunch with cocktails

The Ivy Castle View
The Ivy Castle View

We’ve missed eating out, so we’re making the most of the whole experience now that we can, and enjoying cocktails with our lunch. At The Ivy Castle View, we’re sipping on an Itchycoo Park, from the Summer of Love cocktail menu – a Haku vodka shaken with cucumber, mint, ginger liqueur and a splash of Fever Tree ginger ale while taking in the view of Guildford Castle. Or maybe it’s The Cosy Club you love, with its wonderfully decadent interiors and a porn star martini. We’re wondering if it’s greedy to start with brunch at The Cosy Club, then lunch at The Ivy? No, we didn’t think so either. If you’ve got the kids on tow, The Cosy Club do a fab kids’ menu too.

4. Or, you know, just get takeaway

Rather sit in a sunny park with five of you (the gorgeous Guildford Castle gardens are just across the road)? Head to Tunsgate Quarter for food-on-the go – for perfect pastries and a darned good coffee, it’s GAIL’s Bakery for us. Or if we’re in the mood for healthy Vietnamese street food, it’s Pho to go! Make mine the Pho House Special. Of course you can also grab a table at GAIL’s and at Pho, too, if it’s a quick bite you’re after between shops! Nom nom.

5. Get a makeover

Fancy a makeover? Don’t we all. And for my money, it’s got to be cult make up brand Bobbi Brown. We’re loving this summer’s bright lippies (I’ll take a Waterlily thanks) and the limited edition Pink Glow highlighting powder – perfect for creating a gorgeous summer glow. But for an absolute makeover, I’ll also be needing new specs, and the style service at David Clulow means you can have a pair for your changing looks.

6. Turn culture vulture

And finally, a spot of culture – thanks to the brand new Soho Fine Art gallery. Pop in to check out the latest collections of contemporary paintings from a range of talented artists.
