10 fun things to do (instead of mowing the lawn)

Spring has sprung! And that means our gardens are coming back to life. Buds are appearing, flowers unfurling and grass is growing.

Frankly, it can be a bit of a drag, can’t it. Hauling the mower out of the shed, making sure you’ve got petrol, or untangling the extra long extension lead, pushing the mower back and forth, then clearing up the cut grass before the kids or the dog trample it inside.

1/ Picnic in your own back yard
With the rules of lockdown lifting and up to six people allowed to meet up outdoors from Mon 29 March, it’s a brilliant time to catch up with friends. Prepare a picnic, put the wine on ice and gather five of your nearest and dearest for a long-overdue catch up.
2/ Read a book
Finding time to do something simple like reading a book can be a challenge – so reclaim some quiet me-time on the weekend, instead of mowing the lawn! Fill the bath with bubbles, light a scented candle, grab a book and lock the goddamn door. You have at least an hour before someone realises you’re MIA.
3/ Get back to nature
The sun is shining, blossoms are out and the bluebells are on their way. And after Mon 29 March, we’re allowed to travel outside our local areas – so let’s make the most of it. 4/ Bake scones and eat them
Who doesn’t love a freshly baked scone, straight from the oven, slathered in jam and clotted cream? Even better, enjoy them with freshly brewed coffee, sitting out on a rug on your lawn.
5/ Play a game of boules
All you need is a set of balls and a small area of lawn and you’re good to go. The rules of this traditional French garden game are simple – throw the boules as close as possible to the jack, while trying to knock your rivals boules out of the way. Simples! It’s a good game to enjoy with the family – and will bring some spring Continental vibes to your garden.
6/ Take a trip down memory lane
When was the last time you looked through your childhood photo albums or home videos? Chance are it was years ago. So now that you’ve freed up an extra hour or so of your weekends, there’s time to re-live your teenager years. Go on, you know you want to!
7/ Write a letter
Yes, an actual letter. Using pen and paper. Letter writing feels like a forgotten art form in today’s highly digital world – so go back to basics. There are three good reasons to write a letter – you’ll make someone else happy, handwriting stimulates creativity, and writing promotes mindfulness.
8/ Go for a swim
From the end of the month leisure centres including swimming pools will reopen. And the benefits of swimming are well-known – as well as great stress reliever, swimming is low impact, gives a full body workout and burns calories.
9/ Plant some flowers in your garden
Your lawn is looking lovely, so brighten up your borders with some flowers. Spring is the perfect time to plant summer flowering bulbs in your garden like lilies, dahlias and freesias.
10/ Research and book a mini break
