P-p-p-pick up a pumpkin!
C'mon, it's time to prep for Halloween! Head to one of these local farms and make the kids put the legwork in before they can start carving.
It’s almost Halloween which means it’s time to let the kids loose on a poor old pumpkin with a Stanley knife (supervised, of course). Want to make it more of an adventure than simply popping to our local supermarket – how about picking your own? The orange gourds are ripe ‘n ‘ready and have zero food miles – here’s the Muddy guide to the best places to nab yours in Surrey.
Secretts of Milford

Celebrate all things pumpkin at Secretts Pumpkin Week where as well as picking your own you, there’s a fancy-dress competition and a pumpkin-themed menu including pumpkin curry, pumpkin soup and pumpkin cake, plus a BBQ. More than 35,000 pumpkin seeds were planted this year at Secretts, which will produce about 60,000 pumpkins. Bring along something to help you carry, drag or wheel your pumpkin from the field.
Garson’s Farm, Esher

Choose your own pumpkin from this massive 155-acre farm just outside Esher on the banks of the River Wey at West End. This is one of the biggest PYO farms in the UK with around 26 different crops. Right now, as well as pumpkins, you can also PYO sweetcorn, squash, apples, cauliflowers and dahlias. You’ll need to pre-book your Farm Pass in advance. From Mon 11 Oct kids can also join in the Spooky Halloween Activities.
There there are plenty of pre-picked pumpkins available in the Pumpkin Market right now.The Pumpkin Festival takes place on Sat 16 and Sun 17 Oct, and from Sat 23 to Sun 31 Oct. There will be pumpkin carving and decorating, entertainers, food stalls and pumpkin displays. Tickets are selling fast though, so be quick for this one.
Take a tractor ride to the Priory Farm pumpkin field and pick your very own gourd ready for carving. More than 10,000 pumpkins are grown at Priory Farm each year including big ones, small ones and warty ones.
Tulley’s Farm, Crawley

Just a smidge across the border in Sussex, Tulley’s Farm doesn’t do thing by halves (the Shocktober Fest for Halloween is also legendary) – and this year has more than 450,000 pumpkins ripe for the picking. There are daytime PYO sessions, as well as night picking – and there are also more than 30 photo opportunities set up around the farm. Tickets must be pre-booked, and they’re selling fast.
