Surrey Christmas gift guide

Still got Christmas gifts to buy? Check out this guide for savvy shoppers who want to keep it local.

Heaven scent

We love these gorgeous scented candles from Surrey-base company Candle Spa. All the candles are hand-poured, and made with natural soy wax. And the fragrances – which have been developed with the help of leading spas and beauty salons – have great ‘throw’, which means they give a lot of bang for their buck. The range includes scents like lavender and black pepper, mint and wild jasmine, and pomegranate and white fig. The luxury three-wick candles cost £35, the single-wick in 30cl tumbler cost £20.

Stylish touch

Give the gift of hygge with these gorgeous sheep skin rugs from Cobham-based company Surrey Style. We particularly love the classic ivory Isabella sheepskin rug, but they also come in taupe, dark grey, black and vole. And snuggle. From £40.

Art attack

What to buy the person who has everything? Answer: art. And there’s no need to trek to London now that Belgravia Art is based just out of Cranleigh. You’ll have to book an appointment to view the art, or you can order online. There’s no denying it’s a luxury gift – this Gered Mankowitz print of Jimi Hendrix comes in at a cool £4,250. But it’s also an investment.

A cushy life

Quirky and fun, these cute cushions from Somerset lifestyle brand Pignut will stamp a bit of personality to any sofa. The gift shop at Denbies Wines Estate have a range of choices – so whether you’re buying for a cat lover or a dog person, or both, they’re covered. £38

Clockwise from back, square velvet clutch £39.50, envelope clutch £21, blue velvet square clutch with silver star £30, box velvet clutch with sequin star and silver chain strap £45.

Silver leaf

I’ve got these gorgeous Monstera leaf earrings on my Christmas list. They come with a detachable gemstone cluster in sterling silver, and are handmade by Oorla Morgan in her little studio near Hampton Court or at the Art Shed in the Medicine Garden in Cobham.  The leaf measures about 25 x 25 mm, and the earring drop measures about 50mm.

Satin and lace

Slinky, sexy and elegant enough to wear in the boudoir or – if you’re feeling daring, tucked into jeans with a blazer buttoned over the top. These Gold Hawk silk camisoles are flying of the rail at Guildford’s The Gate Boutique. A dead cert winner of a Christmas gift. £225

It’s a wrap

Gabrielle Vary’s geometric designs may be bang up to date but they’re created by hand on vintage knitting machines in softest lambswool. Buy this striking scarf, or browse her wraps, cardigans, ponchos, cushions, throws and baby blankets in multiple pattern and colour choices. Scarves from £59.

Silver statement

If these stunning earrings turn up in my Christmas stocking this year – I certainly won’t be disappointed.(Mr Muds, are you paying attention?) They’re part of the silk collection – if you’re feeling generous you could buy the matching pendant. £180

Bagsie this!

Quirky, cool and totally gorgeous, we’re loving this super soft sheepskin beanbag – perfect for any teen hideaway. It’s sumptuously soft, made in England using British sheepskin, and gives off a hip Scandi vibe – although perhaps slightly less so with a teenager slumped in it. Never mind the price – if you work it out on a cost-per-use basis you’re totally quids in – cos I’m betting you’ll never get them out if it. £480

Modern planes can also be taken for a whirl over the countryside. From £190.

The Art of Curry

Gift experiences are super popular – and this is the perfect his and hers gift so you can spend the day learning to make an authentic Indian curry. Sameena Thompson is the lady in charge, and she’ll share her secret family recipes, and unravel some of the mysteries of blending spices. Classes are held in Farncombe, near Godalming.

Gone fishing!

Any adventure that gets kids off their devices and outside is a winner in my book. But I quite like the idea of killing two birds with one stone with this gift idea. A father and daughter/ mother and son (interchange as appropriate) gift experience. The guys at the Surrey-based We Fly Fish offer various packages for family fly fishing adventures. And everything is taken care of (equipment, permits etc), so all they’ll need to do is turn up and catch some fish. One day for two anglers £320.

Breech Lane Curry

What to buy the budding chef? We love giving gift experiences – and for those in north Surrey, a class at this home-based Indian cookery school in Walton-on-the-Hill is the perfect gift. Curry lovers will learn to make authentic Indian food that is healthy, honest and homemade under the tuition of Jaya Malani who will share family recipes and cooing techniques.
