The alternative guide to Valentine’s Day

Not the romantic type? Feel the love with Muddy's alternative Valentine's picks – and there won't be a sad single rose in sight.

Trek with llamas

Head to the Merry Harriers pub in Hambledon, between Chiddingfold and Godalming, for a day out with these calm and gentle creatures. Book the Valentine’s Day B&B llama trek package and make a weekend of it. You’ll get a bottle of Prosecco on arrival, a three-course dinner and B&B stay, and the following morning head out into the pretty Surrey Hills on the llama trek which includes lunch. The V-Day package is available on 14, 15 and 16 Feb and costs £395 a couple, or £450 if you upgrade to the Shepherd’s Hut.

Fly high

Take your romance to another level at the Goodwood Estate near the Sussex / Surrey border this Valentine’s Day. Goodwood have various flying experiences on offer, including ones where you get to take the controls of vintage aircraft like this Stearman G-CCXB. The Goodwood Aviation Experience for two people includes a flight in a state-of-the-art Cessna followed by lunch and costs £199.

Get sweet together

Indulge your sweet tooth with your sweet heart and enrol in a lollipop making workshop at Spun Candy. The hour-long class, at the main candy kitchen in Spitalfields in London, will take you on a sugary journey together through the art of making rainbow coloured lollipops in a variety of shapes and sizes. At the end of the class you’ll get to take home at least three of your lollipops. The cost is £60 per person.

Hook a big one

The couple that fishes together, stays together. Well that’s what I saw on a mug once – so it must be true. If you fancy celebrating Valentine’s this year with a spot of his and hers fly fishing, book a day out with a coach from Surrey-based We Fly Fish. There’s nothing they don’t know about fly fishing, including the best spots to actually catch a fish, and they offer lessons for all levels and experience. Everything you’ll need for the day is included. Your only job is to turn up and reel in the big one.

Car and spa

Can’t agree on a V-day treat that you’ll both enjoy? Then the Car and Spa package at the luxury Brooklands Hotel in Weybridge might be the perfect solution. He’ll have a 30 minute driving experience in a Mercedes-Benz 3.0 litre V6 AMG at Mercedes-Benz World next door, while you head to the hotel’s BSpa for a 50 minute Caudalie Divine body massage. You’ll also have use of the BSpa facilities including the brand new sunlight therapy room. And later you can meet for dinner in the hotel’s 1907 restaurant and bar. If you’re looking to up the lurve-o-meter, book the proposal package.

Catch a show

Steer clear of the sappy loves stories and head to Richmond Theatre for this production of The Girl On The Train, based on the book by Paula Hawkins. Starring Samantha Womack (Eastenders, Game On, Kingsman) critics are raving about the show, and even if you already know the story of Rachel Watson and her obsession with her past life, apparently there are plenty of surprises in the play.

Fizz and films

Okay, this is my one concession to romance. But it’s not the gazing-into-each-other’s-eyes-over-a-candlelit-dinner type of romance. We’re talking the snuggling-up-in-your-room-with-fizz-popcorn-and-unlimited-films variety of romance. The Runnymede on Thames at Egham has a Valentine’s Day offer – £160 for two including breakfast and use of the spa. So which film will it be?
