The Apollo Theatre Company brings this adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s story to the stage just in time for Christmas. When Kai is sntached from his home by the beautiful, cruel Snow Queen, his best friend Gerda sets off to rescue him. Along the way she meets a series of strangers who help her in her quest. It’s most suitable for kids aged 4+. Most days there are shows at 11am, 2pm and 4pm. Tickets are £9.

Christmas Glow – RHS Garden Wisley – until 2 Jan
Get into the festive spirit at Wisley with the Jigantics light installation around the gardens. Giant illuminated flowers bloom throughout the gardens in this stunning display. There are also natural Christmas decorations around the gardens, and a floral display in the glasshouse

Father Christmas in the Grotto – Painshill, Cobham – until Sat 24 Dec
Follow the festive route through the gorgeous gardens at Painshill and meet Santa in the Grotto. There’s a Christmas Wish Tent where children will be given an activity pack, and where you can stop for refreshments. Elves will then guide you to the magical crystal grotto where the jolly man in the red suit will be waiting. Tickets are £8 adults, £7 concessions , £12 children.

Hair by Sam McKnight, at Somerset House’s Embankment Galleries, London – until March 12 2017
If you’re planning a trip to the smoke, this exhibition will be one to catch. Hairstylist Sam McKnight has styled some of the world’s most famous locks, creating some of the most iconic images in popular culture – from Princess Diana’s slicked back style and Madonna’s Bedtime Stories album covver, to Tilda Swinton chanelling Bowie. He’s worked on more than 190 Vogue covers and styled all the supermodels, including of course Kate Moss (above). This exhibition celebrates his 40-year career from the late 1970s to today. To coincide with the exhibition, a book Hair by Sam McKnight, has been published and is available for £35.

Winter Wonders Children’s Trail – Winkworth Arboretum, Godalming – Wed 21 Dec to 2 Jan 2017
Follow Winkworth’s traditional Christmas children’s trail around the arboretum. No booking is needed, just meet at the entrance kiosk. Dogs on leads are welcome, and the cost is 50 pence per trail. The arboretum is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

St PEtersburg Classic Ballet – G Live, Guildford – Mon 26 to Wed 28 Dec
The St Petersburg Classic Ballet presents two of the most magical ballets, alongside a full orchestra and soloists who will take your breath away. The delightfully festive Nutcracker, about a fairy tale adventure into a magical world of swirling snowflakes, Sugar Plum fairies and toys that come to life, is on Mon 26 (at 7.30pm) and Tues 27 (at 2.30pm and 7.30pm). Then on Wed (at 2.30pm and 7.30pm), Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake will take to the stage. Tickets are £32-£42.

Linocut Lives On, at Watts Gallery and Artists’ Village, Compton, extended until 1 Jan
The Linocut exhibition was due to finish in October, but due to popular demand it’s been extended until Jan 1. So if you didn’t get a chance to see it, there’s still time. It features work by some of the top British linocut artists of today, along with works by historical heroes of the genre such as Edward Bawden. Co-curated by designer Cath Kidston, this personal selection will feature a fascinating range of works made using linoprint techniques with all artwork available for sale.
