We're not going out this month, but here's inspiration for things to do at home throughout November, and some events to book now.

Optohedron by Will Nash

ART INSTALLATION: Optohedron by Will Nash
■  North Downs Way National Trail, near Newlands Corner ■ ongoing

Take a walk along the North Downs Way National Trail – a short way from Newlands Corner – to view a new artwork installation ‘Optohedron’ by artist Will Nash. The distinctive sculptural seat is the latest addition to the Surrey Hills Arts project called ‘Inspiring Views’, which opens up hidden views, takes on conservation work, improves access and commissions artists to interpret the views through art.


TALKS: Art as Change in Victorian Britain
■ Online – Via Zoom from What’s Gallery, Compton ■  Every Monday from 9 Nov – 7 Dec

With the onset of the mid 19th century, certain Victorian artists saw their role as social reformers, documenting the human toll of poverty, disease, crime and inequality, and believing deeply in the power of visual culture and literature to solve social divides. This online course explores the artists, artworks and events that introduced a new socially conscious approach to art. It’s from 11am-12.15pm, and the cost is £50 for all five lectures or £12 each.


MARKET: Epsom Craft and Gift Market

This event has been moved online following the government’s announcement for a November lockdown. Head to the @FollyFairs instagram grid where you’ll find a wide selection of local makers and artists offer their handcrafted items. @FollyFairs


CHRISTMAS MARKET: Virtual Cranleigh Christmas Fair
■ Online ■ Fri 13 – Sun 22 Nov

This Christmas fair attracts top-of-the-range stallholders from gifts and clothing through to Christmas decorations and artisan food and drinks stalls. This year more than 100 stalls are taking part in the virtual event.


ART: Windsor Contemporary Arts Fair
■ Online ■ Fri 13 – Sun 22 Nov

Artist Lexi Laine

How cool is this? This ethereal image is the work of underwater photographer Lexi Laine, just one of the amazing artists appearing at The Contemporary Art Fair online event this month. More than 160 creatives will be showcasing their work, including printmakers, painters, ceramicists and independent galleries from all over the UK and Europe. Have a virtual mooch, and, if you see something you love, prices start at just 40 quid.


MUSIC: Keeping the Lights On
■ Streamed from Epsom Playhouse, Epsom ■ Tues 17 to Thurs 19 Nov

Have your evening out – in! Join singer and jazz pianist Andrew D. Brewis for this specially recorded streaming concert celebrating musical theatre. He’ll be honouring the darkened playhouses of the West End and Broadway with a tribute to the legends of musical theatre, past and present. Expect an evening of theatrical magic, all conjured by Andrew and a beautiful Steinway grand piano.


WINE TASTING: Wines from Joie de Vin – online tasting
■ Online via Zoom ■ Thurs 19 Nov, 8pm

 Joie de Vin winkle out the very best wines from across France – and this is your chance to sample them. Surrey wine educator Heather Dougherty is joined by Love Wine Festival Laura Clay and Richard Bampfield for this tasting session. Tickets are £30 per household and include six 100ml tasting bottles, or £10 per household with the option of buying six full sized bottles at at 15% discount.


ART WORKSHOP: Drawing to Painting: Exploring the Domestic Space
■ Online via Zoom from Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village ■ Thursdays, 19 November to 10 December

Learn how to draw and paint from home in this four-part online course. Under the guidance of our expert tutor, Tim Patrick you will be introduced to the skills and techniques needed to translate the objects and space you see around you into a considered composition. Using pencils and oil paint, observe how space, light, colour and texture interact whilst gaining a deeper understanding in colour mixing and application.


ART EXHIBITION: Epsom and Ewell Art Group Winter Exhibition
■ Online ■ Mon 23 – Sun 29 Nov

This group of semi-professional and amateur artists had planned to bring their winter exhibition of paintings to Denbies Art Gallery, but it is also available to view online. Most of the work is also for sale.


Susan Murray brings her comedy to the Godalming Gag House Comedy Club

COMEDY: Godalming Gag House Comedy

The December line up for this professional comedy club includes Susan Murray and Roger Monkhouse. There are shows at 7.30pm and 9.15pm with no interval.


CHRISTMAS: The Snow Queen
■ Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford ■ Fri 11 Dec – Thurs 24 Dec

Yvonne Arnaud’s traditional panto won’t be happening this year, but they’ll still be bringing Christmas cheer with a magical adaptation of Hans Christian-Anderson’s timeless fairy tale.


CHRISTMAS: Christmas at Kew
■ Kew Gardens, Richmond ■ Wed 18 Nov – Sun 3 Jan

Returning for its eighth year, Kew’s winter trail takes a new route, leading you for the first time through the beautifully illuminated Rose Garden. Old favourites and brand new light installations will sparkle and glow around you. There’s a glittering tunnel of bells, giant illuminated seed heads and majestic trees wrapped in light on your way to the dazzling treetop waterfall, where beams of light interplay in a breath-taking aerial dance. Pre booking is essential.


CHRISTMAS: Ice Skating
■ Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink ■ Fri 20 Nov – 3 Jan 2021

‘Skate back in time’ they say and you’ve a seriously stunning backdrop for your triple salchow at Henry VIII’s old gaff in Surrey, floodlit with colours for the evening. Skating sessions are 45 minutes, and booking is recommended. The cafe serves up pies, rum punches and fizz. Make a day of it and tour the palace while you’re there.


CHRISTMAS: Glow Wisley 2020
■ RHS Wisley, Woking ■ Sat 21 Nov – 4 Jan

See the garden come alive at night with fantastical illuminations to light your way on Wisley’s enchanting festive trail, reimagined for 2020.


PANTO: D!CK – The Adult Panto
■ The Back Room of The Star Inn, Guildford ■ Wed 25 Nov – Sat 9 Jan

One for adults only – and not recommended for those who are easily offended, but if you fancy a ribald chuckle or two, this one’s for you. It’s put on by The Guildford Fringe Theatre Company, tickets are £19.50 each.


CHRISTMAS: Glow Wild 2020
■ Wakehurst Place, East Grinstead ■ Thurs 26 Nov – Wed 30 Dec

This enchanting winter display returns to Wakehurst for the seventh year. As darkness falls, the gardens are brought to life with glowing lanterns, mesmerising installations and other visual treats. Three new artists debut this year. Absolutely magical. Quiet session tickets are available for those who may benefit from a more comfortable sensory experience.
