Magic Goes Wrong at Yvonne Arnaud Theatre

THEATRE: Goodnight, Mister Tom

Michelle Magorian’s Goodnight, Mister Tom is brought to life in this stage adaptation by David Wood. The story follows William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside during WWII and builds a friendship with the elderly Tom Oakley.

EVENT: Floodlit Flat Racing

It’s Kempton’s first fixture of 2022 on the all weather track, so wrap up warm and put your bets in to have a chance of starting the year off with a huge win.

ART WORKSHOP: Landscape series – Snow scene

Either by a river or in a forest, snow will add an extra atmosphere with its whiteness and peacefulness. During this one-day workshop, artist and tutor Songül Yilmaz Meier will show you how to create a winter scene with snow. Cost is from £17.40-£21.

COMEDY: Jason Manford – Like Me

Jason Manford returns to the comedy stage after focusing on his Absolute Radio show for a few years. Manford is famed for his observational humour, and the past 18 months have certainly provided him with plenty of material!

EXHIBITION: UCA Farnham MFA Photography Show

The University for the Creative Arts’ (UCA) Farnham’s MFA photography students will showcase their very best artwork at The Lightbox. Fun fact: the photography department has a reputation for educating some of the most innovative photographers of recent times.

TALKS: The Life and Works of Lee Krasner [SOLD OUT]
■ The Guildford Institute, Guildford ■ Wed 12 Jan
The wife of Jackson Pollock rarely stepped out of her husband’s shadow, but as an artist in her own right she wasn’t entirely under-appreciated in the art world. Art History lecturer Tammy Ellis will talk about this feisty and intelligent woman, including her contribution to American abstract expressionism and her insistence on her own specific style. Cost is from £17.40-£21.

EXHIBITION: Heartlands: Inspired by our Landscape
■ Watts Gallery, Compton ■ Fri 14 Jan – Sun 13 March
This exhibition brings together work by eight Surrey artists to celebrate the county’s treasured landscapes, from Boxhill to the River Mole, Newlands Corner to the Devil’s Punchbowl.

WORKSHOP: Photography Workshop

Join award-winning photographer Eddie Hyde on this one-day workshop to learn how to get the best from your camera and what makes a good photograph. If you can’t make this one, there is one workshop scheduled every month from January to June.

EXHIBITION: Hubert Arthur Finney: Out of the Shadows

The first of its kind in over fifty years, this exhibition presents previously unrecorded works from Hubert Arthur Finney’s studio alongside the first-ever publication on the artist (1905-1991), based on his recently discovered autobiography.

WORKSHOP: Game Masterclass with Oliver Thompson

Take your dinner parties to the next level with a full day workshop learning about game. You’ll learn about four different game meats – pigeon, quail, venison and pheasant – making dishes and accompaniments for each one. If your attempts at making risotto are more like a sludgy mess than delicious al dente Italian, this could be the course for you. Celebrity chef and author Valentina Harris uncovers the intricate technique for making risotto in this one-day course. TALK: In Conversation with Emily Chappell

In 2016, endurance cyclist Emily Chappell cycled 4000km in 13 days from Belgium to Turkey, riding day and night to become the first woman home in The Transcontinental race. She will discuss her acclaimed books and remarkable life story at the Electric Theatre.
