If you like your politicians skewered with satire and your politics raw, this is for you. As befits the fastest moving story of our time, the script will be updated – nightly if necessary – to reflect events. The scriptwriters could be very very busy.

A harrowing story based on a true story follows a man as he comes to terms with the suicide of his close friend. This is an important show to debut as the world becomes more accepting of open discussions about mental health.

Rainforests and volcanoes are brought to life inside the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardenr with this exotic array of vibrant orchid displays which celebrates the biodiversity of Indonesia, the land of 17,000 islands.

Watts Contemporary Gallery presents an exhibition of work by Norman Ackroyd, widely acclaimed as Britain’s foremost contemporary etcher and a leading landscape artist and printmaker. The exhibition brings together more than 40 aquatint etchings – including a number of new prints – inspired by the artist’s expeditions to the edge of the British Archipelago over almost 50 years.

DAYS OUT: Lightopia Festival London

January can be a bit bleak so flick the switch and let there be light. Lightopia is coming to Chiswick House for its annual illuminations and the show is expected to be bigger, better, and uses more light bulbs than ever before. No one will be able to make a cuppa in West London but it’ll be oh so worth it.

An important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. This exhibition takes an in-depth look at Hockney’s ingenious exploration of a diverse range of media, spanning six decades of creative output.

LONDON SHOW: Cirque Du Soleil

LONDON EXHIBITION: Tim Walker: Wonderful Things
■ V&A Museum, London ■ ends 8 March 2020 

Curated in collaboration with the lauded avant garde Vogue portrait and fashion photographer, this will feature some of Walker’s seminal, fantastical images from his 25-year career, featuring major celebs including Kate Moss, Sir David Attenborough, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Björk and many more. You can also see 10 new photographic series created for the show, by Walker, influenced by the museum’s exhibits.

EXHIBITION: Polesden Voices

Find out the stories of the people who lived and worked at Polesden Lacey over the last century in this exhibtion. It’s open daily in the house from noon and from 11am on weekends. Normal admission applies.

LONDON EXHIBITION: Abba – Super Troupers

Mama Mia! A brand new (and, quite frankly, must-see) exhibition is coming to The O2, London this month – ABBA: Super Troupers is a journey through the Swedish band’s career and will feature personal items and artefacts never seen before in the UK (6 Dec – 21 Aug 2020).
