Find a wedding snapper

Photography by Caroline Stocking

So, you’ve got the dress, and the venue has been booked. A cake maker is preparing to make that six tier chocolate extravaganza you’ve always dreamed about. And now you need to book a photographer.

Some might say this is the most important wedding-day decision you’ll make. The day itself will most likely pass in blurr – and your photographer is the one who will record all the detail to provide you with long-lasting memories.

There’s no doubt that in Surrey we are swamped with an amazing array of individual wedding photographers – each with their very own style. Here photographer Caroline Stocking gives her advice for choosing a snapper for your special day.

Take your time

Don’t rush and book the first photographer you’ve seen on the internet.  Take time to research the many photographers in your chosen area.

Have a think about what style of wedding photography you like … is it traditional portraiture, documentary, candid, editorial or artistic.

Check out the websites and portfolios of the photographers you like, and see who fits the bill.  Create a short list.

Visit Wedding Fairs, contact photographers, email, ask questions.

Budget

Wedding photography is expensive.  But if you choose the right photographer for you, every penny will be so worth it.

Photography is one of your biggest expenses on your wedding day.  But it’s always a good idea to set a budget.  There is no point setting your heart on the most amazing photographer, if they are well over your budget.

Photography packages can range from anywhere from £500 up to £2000 or higher.  The more you include in your package, the higher the price.

Have a think about how much of your day you actually want to capture.

When booking your photographer, always bare in mind, they are not just there taking photos for your day, there is a lot of time and effort spent preparing beforehand,  and editing your images afterwards – so that initial quotation may seem high, but it factors in all the time and labour involved in your special day.

Don’t ever expect something for nothing.  We all love a bargain, but a really talented photographer has worked and studied long and hard to be that good.  It’s not just about having a good camera.

Always remember: you get what you pay for.

Meet up, ask questions

Don’t book a photographer without meeting them.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Photographers love nothing more than meeting potential clients, and sharing this special time.

Your photographer is going to be a major part of your special day.  They will be there, through all the personal, cherished moments, so make sure you feel 100% comfortable with them.

Don’t hesitate to air any concerns you have about photography on your special day. Photographers have attended hundreds of weddings, and will do their best to solve any issues you may have.

Pre shoot

A pre shoot is always a good idea.  It gives you a chance to spend some time together, and get to know each other.  It also gives couples an idea of how it will feel on the day.

Venue

Check your photographer either already knows your venue, or will make a venue visit.

A professional photographer will always do a pre wedding venue visit, and plan their day.

Travel

If you have come across your absolute ideal photographer, but they are based hours away, ask if they will travel.  You don’t have to just choose a photographer because they live down the road.  But remember, travel costs.

And finally…

Once your decision has been made, and your big day has arrived.  Smile!  You’ve booked a photographer to document your special day, so relax, enjoy it and embrace it!
