Fitness with a difference

If you're feeling uninspired by your regular fitness class, it might be time to try something new. Martial X Fitness offers a unique blend of cardio, strength and conditioning, combat training and kickboxing - and I'm a huge fun.

The Dorking Friday Fitness classes are run by Martial X Fitness – and if you’re looking to mix up our exercise regime this could for you.

There are three one-hour classes: a Mums’ Fitness class at 11am to work on toning up, losing a few pounds and basically improving overall fitness; a kickboxing class at noon to box out the week’s frustrations; and a bootcamp at 1pm.

And the best bit? You can kick back with a Pinot at 5pm totally guilt free.

Martial X Fitness is a welcoming group of fully qualified personal trainers – all of which are World Champion and National Champion kickboxers. As well as as the Friday Fitness sessions in Dorking, they offer one-to-one sessions, bootcamps, combat fitness, PT sessions and group personal training. This is personalised fitness training: they’ll come to you – whether that’s home or work and bring along all the gear you need for the session.

The sessions are completely tailored to you and what’d you’d like to work on.

I really like the idea of getting group of friends together for a group training session – and it’s really quite affordable at £40 an hour for between one and five people – so just £8 a session for a group of five. Any additional people after five are charged at £8 each.

The Friday Fitness sessions are held at in the Desire to Dance studio on Curtis Road just a short walk from Dorking town centre.

I went last week and our trainers were Roxy and Cerize – both World Champion kickboxers and fully qualified personal trainers. They’re also among the instructors who run the kids’ martial arts programmes at Martial X Academy.

It’s fun, it’s different and you’ll work every muscle. As trained kickboxers, there’s a nod towards the martial arts – but the workout itself did not involve defence training. We worked our upper bodies with pad work and a few boxing moves, and our legs with high kicks and variations on the traditional squat. As well as the fast moving, high-impact work, we also did some stretching and flexibility work.

Class sizes are small and there are two instructors, so you feel like you’re getting a really personalised workout. Our group of three included three fitness levels – and they easily catered to each of us tailoring exercises to suit all involved.

The session lasts an hour – and involved bursts of cardio, as well as stretching exercises – so you’re getting an all-body workout. And we had a great laugh, too, boxing and sweating out the week. I left the studio feeling great, and a tiny bit smug that I was heading into the weekend with a good workout already done.

Standard fitness gear is fine – I’d go for Lycra leggings and a sports tee. The instructors will bring along the gear, like boxing gloves and pad, and floor mats.

Good for? Anyone who wants to mix up their fitness regime and have some fun – it will suit all fitness abilities.

Not for? The Friday Fitness sessions are on a Friday in Dorking, so if you work in London during the week it might not be for you. (But you could book a session with one of the Martial X Fitness trainers for a day that does suit you!)
