Run Surrey, Run
What have you got lined up for the new year? I’ve got all sorts of things planned – some involving Lycra and some just a simple as getting my daughter to school on time each day (my fault, not hers!).
If donning Lycra and pounding the pavements is on your New Year hit list, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more motivating and spectacular event than the Mercer Surrey Half Marathon – voted the UK’s best road run – and we’ve got two free places to give away. Go to the pinned post on our FB page to enter!
This year the marathon celebrates its 5th birthday on March 11, when 6000 runners will descend on Woking Leisure Centre to take part.
The half marathon is brilliant for new runners – as well as seasoned pros. The pretty course course is flat and on closed roads (no pesky cars to slow you down!!), and attracts athletes looking to achieve a personal best, as well as newbies. The picturesque run is made even more enjoyable by live music stations and communities of cheering supporters.
Want to enjoy the half marathon experience but with less running? Then the 5km race is the one for you. Also set on flat, traffic-free roads, it features some of the best bits of the half marathon, but only takes the average runner about 30 minutes to complete.
Aside from the massive endorphin rush you’ll get – and of course boasting rights at having completed a half marathon – there’s also the feel good factor you’ll get from raising money for a good cause.
The event raises around £400,000 every year for a local and national charities, so joining a charity team is not only a great opportunity to fulfil your ‘good deed for the year’, but you’ll also enjoy the support you get for being part of the team.
Alternatively, you could enter a team of three or more from your office into the Morrisons Solicitors Corporate Challenge – where you all complete the half marathon distance whilst representing your company, department or branch. The challenge is a fantastic team-building exercise – as you motivate each-other through training and the race.
And if running’s not your thing, there are plenty of activities on offer in the pop-up Event Village to keep both runners and spectators entertained, including live video streaming on a giant TV screen, live performances, charity stalls, shops, cafes and more.
And of course business and restaurants in Woking Town Centre always have pretty good ‘race day deals’ so it could be a good chance to snag a bargain.
There is still plenty of time to get in shape for the race, and once you enter you can download your free Mercer Surrey Half Marathon training plan. But get your skates on – and your running shoes – as the event always sells out in February.
