20 pubs with gorgeous gardens in Surrey

Praise be, the pubs are opening – and just in time for summer weather! Here are 20 of the best pub gardens to enjoy a socially-distanced sip in across Surrey. Cheers!

THE WHITE HORSE, HASCOMBE

This pub doesn’t do anything by halves – in addition to having stunning terrace dining, there’s also picnic-style tables in a lush garden setting. And while the pub has been closed during lockdown, everything’s had a lick of paint and a spruce up. The food, naturally, is top notch – served up by exciting Surrey chef, Valentino Gentile. Call in for a bite in the sun, washed down with a cold glass of vino from the extensive wine list. The pub reopens on Sat 4 July and booking is advised. whitehorsepub.net

THE RAMBLER’S REST, CHIPSTEAD

The pub has recently had a makeover, and this includes the massive garden that’s set over two levels. And it’s in a wonderfully scenic spot, making this pub garden the perfect pitstop after a walk in the nearby Banstead Woods. The pub is open from Sat 4 July and new social distancing measures are in place. Bookings are recommended. theramblersrest.co.uk

THE FOX AND HOUNDS, ENGLEFIELD GREEN

Tucked away on the edge of the beautiful Windsor Great Park is The Fox and Hounds. This traditional English pub is family and dog friendly with top notch food and some of the best pizzas you’ll find outside of Italy. From Sat 4 July, the front garden only will be open with a maximum stay of 2.5 hours. Tables are for a maximum of six people on a first come basis – there are no bookings for the moment. thefoxandhoundsrestaurant.com

THE BRIDGE HOTEL, CHERTSEY

With a beautiful terrace looking out on the River Thames, what’s not to like? Idle time away watching nature swan pass. The pub serves seasonal British food from brunch to supper including classics like beer battered cod and chips to lighter options like the Bridge salad with avocado, lentils, beetroot, kale, quinoa and pomegranate, and has a great selection of drinks. It reopens from Sat 20 July. Cheers! bridgehotelchertsey.com

THE PLOUGH INN & BREWERY, COLDHARBOUR

This 17th century country inn has a picket-fenced paved garden with ample seating to enjoy a sunset meal with your friends and family. The kitchen offers delicious home-cooked food, using ingredients sourced from suppliers in the local area including the pub’s very own game from Leith Hill and fresh produce from the pub’s vegetable garden. The pub reopens on Sat 4 July with new measures in place to ensure social distancing. Bookings are recommended, and outdoor tables will be be on a first come basis. ploughinn.com

THE MERRY HARRIERS, HAMBLEDON

A great garden is for the whole family – it’s a big space with round tables and parasols, and even llamas lurking in the field beyond. And if you’re tempted linger longer, you can extend your stay overnight in one of the cute shepherd huts! The pub is open for bookings from Mon 6 July. merryharriers.com

THE RETREAT, STAINES-UPON-THAMES

There’s a cool family vibe going on at this friendly neighbourhood pub in Staines. We’re big fans of the wood-fired pizza, and antipasti sharing platter. The enclosed garden opens out from one of the large dining rooms, and is partly shaded with pergolas and parasols. It’s open from Sat 4 July, and booking for tables inside and out, is recommended. theretreatstaines.co.uk

THE INN ON THE POND, NUTFIELD

This is your quintessential English pub in a pretty rural setting surrounded by fields and marshes, and overlooking the Nutfield cricket pitch and the eponymous pond. It’s popular with both walkers and cyclists – it’s on the National Cycle Route 21 – and I can vouch first hand for the delicious food and excellent choice of real ales. It reopens from Sat 4 July. innonthepond.co.uk

THE CRICKETERS ON THE GREEN, PIRBRIGHT

While the Cricketers on the Green may have been closed during lockdown for in-house drinks and dining, the take-away menu carried on strong and the Yurt Café converted into a local farmshop for essential groceries. But they’re back in business as of Sat 4 July for eating in – both inside and in the lovely garden. Booking is a must – don’t think you’ll chance it for a table, you’ll be turned away. Tables are limited to parties of 8. thecricketersonthegreen.co.uk

THE PERCY ARMS, CHILWORTH

The Percy Arms is an elegant country pub with a wonderful big garden overlooking a pretty stream and with views out to St Martha’s Church. THE BLACK HORSE, REIGATE

Just outside Reigate town centre, The Black Horse has a huge garden that is part terraced and leads to a large grassy area with picnic tables. The attention to detail is lovely; gorgeous woollen throw rugs draped over the backs of the chairs and large plaid cushions angled on the benches. Just outside the door is a large basket of blankets, which is the perfect way to extend the life of this garden when the cooler evenings draw in. The pub reopens on Mon 17 Aug. theblackhorsereigate.com

The garden at The Onslow Arms is gorgeous, and a beautiful place to while away a few hours.
