A quintessential country pub on the edge of Tilford village in south-west Surrey, <a href="https://www.dukeofcambridgetilford.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Duke of Cambridge</a> might just be that rare breed of pub that ticks all the boxes for the perfect pub. It&#8217;s a few miles out of Farnham, in some of the prettiest countryside, and easily accessible from both the A3 and the A31. 



The Duke oozes country charm with relaxed dining spaces and roaring log fires, an outdoor heated terrace, and a garden with a fabulous children&#8217;s playground. Staff are all&nbsp;super warm and friendly and make the place feel like a home from home. And what of the food? More on this later, but spoiler alert, the food is reliably good.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

There’s a lot going on at The Duke – and the vibe depends on where you’re situated. What they have in common is a laid-back, relaxed vibe and a friendly charm. This is a pub where everyone is made to feel very welcome. 



From the car park as you enter, there&#8217;s a glorious covered terrace &#8211; aka the Barn &#8211; which leads down to an open-air terrace, and down further still to a grassy pub garden with its own bar and grill. They all look out of over the playground.



On the terraces, there&#8217;s a cool Scandi vibe going on with soft woollen blankets and sheepskin rugs draped over wooden chairs, large light oak timber beams an a smattering of fairy lights.



Inside, the decor is smart and kind of quirky but unpretentious. There&#8217;s a nod to the royal connection (wall coverings featuring crowns, paintings of Dukes) but also references to Hankley Common golf course next door with coat racks made from former wooden driver golf clubs.



The bar area leads to the relaxed dining room and here there’s something for all occasions – large tables for a crowd, intimate nooks, a private dining area which accommodates eight. On the Saturday I visited, the place was buzzing &#8211; everyone from families and groups of friends to couples.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



Fresh, regional and seasonal ingredients rule when it comes to any gastropub worth its salt &#8211; and The Duke of Cambridge is no different. Menus change often and as much as possible ingredients come from the local area.



There are menus for all occasion from weekend brunch to afternoon tea, a la carte and roast dinners on a Sunday. There&#8217;s also a fixed-price menu Monday to Friday offering two courses for £21.95 and three for £25.95.

On the Saturday of my visit, I was in the mood for steak &#8211; and this is something they do very well at The Duke. But first, a starter, and for me it was the bang bang cauliflower. Crispy, sweet, tangy and delicious. Across the table, Mr M ordered the sesame prawn and squid crumpet &#8211; a take on the Cantonese dish sesame prawn toast &#8211; and very nice it was too. (Yes, I snaffled a little corner to taste-test).

Moving onto the main event, it was steaks all round &#8211; the Grosvenor Collection 28-day dry aged rump cap steak cooked over the glowing coals of the robata grill and served with peppercorn sauce and skin-on fries. We also ordered a side salad of Isle of Wight tomatoes and whipped Rosary goats&#8217; cheese. It was lip-smackingly perfect combination &#8211; cooked to perfection.

Think we couldn’t possibly have stuffed in dessert after all that lot?&nbsp;Au contraire, I came armed with an elasticated waistband, you know. We shared a deliciously decadent Eton mess. 



And to drink? A carafe of crisp dry white wine. Perfect!



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID-FRIENDLY?&nbsp;</h2>

This pub screams kid-friendly thanks to the large garden and adventure playground. And as you&#8217;d expect, it&#8217;s popular with families. There&#8217;s a dedicated young diners&#8217; menu, ideal for kids aged five to 12, with the likes of mac cheese, grilled chicken burger and fish goujons with skin-on fries.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disability-access">DISABILITY ACCESS</h2>



There&#8217;s a large car park at The Duke of Cambridge with plenty of parking including two designated disabled bays closest to the main entrance. There are steps leading to the pub&#8217;s entrance &#8211; but a wheelchair access ramp is available. Customer loos are on the ground floor of the pub, and accessible.

Where do I start? You&#8217;re spoiled for choice in this neck of the woods &#8211; not least with Bourne Woods, a favourite Hollywood film location, just a mile and a half down the road. <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/surrey/frensham-little-pond" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frensham Little Pond</a> is two minutes in car. It&#8217;s perfect if you want to work up an appetite with a walk, but don&#8217;t want anything too strenuous. A circular route around the pond will take about 45 minutes. 



<a href="https://www.waverley.gov.uk/services/greenspaces-leisure-and-things-to-do/greenspaces-in-waverley/key-sites/frensham-great-pond" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frensham Great Pond</a> is a little further &#8211; about 10 minutes&#8217; drive &#8211; where you can swim, fish (if you have a permit) or just go for a wander.



<a href="https://rural-life.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Rural Life Living Museum</a>, an open-air museum which tells the story of country life, is also about 10 minutes away by car and worth a visit.



And of course we can&#8217;t forget nearby <a href="https://surreyhills.org/places-to-see/hankley-elstead-commons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hankley Common</a>, known for its expansive heathland and the Atlantic Wall, a relic from World War II.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>

Good for: Absolutely everyone! The Duke seems to have pulled off that tricky job of being all things to all people, from family gatherings, a cosy&nbsp;tête-à-tête, birthday celebrations, girly get-togethers.



Not for: Dieters may struggle as the food is certainly hearty. It’s a pub-style restaurant and the vibe is pretty casual, so look elsewhere if it’s formal dining you’re after.



The damage: Snacks from £4.50 and starters from £6.50-£12.75. Mains are around the £19 mark rising to around £25 for steak. Puddings are from £7.50.
