<p>Facial aesthetics still comes with plenty of baggage &#8211; from scare stories to seriously outdated assumptions. But the reality is far more nuanced. With expert insight from Dr Wendy King from <a href="https://www.thelodsworthclinic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Lodsworth Clinic</a> in Haslemere, we unpack what’s actually true (and what really isn’t) when it comes to modern treatments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-the-frozen-face-fear"><strong>1. The frozen face fear</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Myth:</strong> Botox makes everyone look expressionless.<br><strong>Reality:</strong> Not if it’s done well, that shiny frozen look should be a thing of the past! Always ask your practitioner what their approach is and be clear about the look you want. Our ideal is very much to tailor treatment to your anatomy. To retain movement and natural expression, and we’re always cautious the first time we treat you: once it’s in, we can’t take it out but we can always adjust and add more if required. It’s normal to have movement &#8211; we only need to look at our kids to see this. But the beauty of botulinum toxin treatment used correctly, is that it can soften a negative emotion (be it tiredness, anger, worry, frustration, distraction…) that you might not be inwardly experiencing. It’s fascinating how this not only shifts how you feel but also impacts on how others react to you.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-filler-fake"><strong>2. Filler = Fake</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Myth:</strong> Dermal fillers always look obvious or overdone.<br><strong>Reality:</strong> Not at all! In our books, dermal filler should look natural and importantly: undetectable. The best filler treatment is where the individual looks great, but you would never know they’d had any ‘work’ done. Treatment should be age-appropriate, always respecting normal anatomy for a gentle refresh &#8211; restoring lost volume and contours, but sadly not all practitioners appreciate this. A good injector will consider the whole face rather than address a single area, to ensure balance and harmony. It’s also important to consider that outcomes often look better with multimodal treatment plans, for example combining filler with skin resurfacing or tightening for optimal results. Every face is different and there is definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-you-have-to-start-young-or-it-s-too-late"><strong>3. You have to start young, or it’s too late</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Myth:</strong> If you don’t start in your 20s, you’ve missed your chance.<br><strong>Reality:</strong> It’s never too late, although I would certainly say that if you look after your skin in your 20’s and 30’s, you will most certainly reap the rewards in later life! Many people need nothing more than a good skincare routine and daily SPF when they’re younger, although facials and micro-needling are brilliant for banking some collagen while you can! However, if that wasn’t on your radar and you’re now trying to play catch up, then there are some incredible options out there! Treatments should be based on individual concerns, not age milestones, and many patients begin in their 40&#8217;s, 50&#8217;s and beyond with excellent results. Preventative treatment can be beneficial, but rejuvenation is possible at any age: we can dramatically improve skin quality, texture and tone, alongside facial rejuvenation and skin tightening. Do your research and find a practitioner that understands you and your face.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-it-s-for-women-only"><strong>4. It’s for women only</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Myth:</strong> Aesthetic treatments are a female-only domain.<br><strong>Reality:</strong> Absolutely not! Increasingly men are signing up for aesthetic treatments &#8211; why should they miss out on all the fun?! As taboo fades, men are realising the benefits of looking a little more refreshed and bright-eyed, and are seeking treatments for confidence, professional image, and aging concerns. But it’s important to remember there is more to aesthetics… from skin boosters and acne scar resurfacing, to hair restoration treatments: there are plenty of reasons why men deserve a look-in!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-it-s-risky-and-unregulated"><strong>5. It’s risky and unregulated</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Myth:</strong> Aesthetic treatments are dangerous.<br><strong>Reality:</strong> OK so yes, this is a very relevant point. Aesthetic treatments in the UK are sadly totally unregulated. Every week we hear of a sad story where a member of the public has unwittingly undergone treatment by a non-medical practitioner and sustained permanent injury. This can be utterly devastating. It is imperative that you do your research and I think the most helpful thing here is to advise you what to look out for &#8211; treatments are not inherently dangerous, but unsafe practice is.</p>



<ul>
<li>Ensure your practitioner is medically, and importantly: clinically qualified. This means doctor, dentist, nurse. Ask for a GMC (or GDC/NMC) number.</li>



<li>What training have they done? How many procedures have they undertaken? What results do they get? What complications have they seen? What is the clinic’s protocol for managing such complications and out of hours emergencies?</li>



<li>Is the clinic safe: it is registered and inspected by a regulatory body such as the CQC or SaveFace?</li>



<li>Is the clinic/practitioner fully insured?</li>



<li>Are the injectable products they use CE- or UKCE-marked? Can I see the packaging?<br>There should never be any pressure to proceed with treatment at the first appointment. Listen to your gut instinct and speak up if something doesn’t feel right.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-6-results-are-instant-and-permanent"><strong>6. Results are instant and permanent</strong></h2>



<p><strong>Myth:</strong> You walk out looking transformed &#8211; and it lasts forever.<br><strong>Reality:</strong> No. In fact, we always say to patients &#8211; slightly counterintuitively &#8211; that when you leave our door, we don’t want you to look like you’ve had any ‘work’ done! Yes to refreshed and glowing, but importantly: still you. While some treatments such as filler can give instant benefit, many of the treatments we undertake are regenerative, and by that I mean they stimulate your own tissue to do the work for natural-looking results. So that means improving cell turn-over, remodelling subcutaneous tissues, stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen, elastin and other structural proteins, tightening and firming skin. None of this happens overnight, rather results improve over weeks or months. Remember also that your face will continue to age behind any treatments you might have undergone. This means in the fullness of time the benefits are likely to diminish, so some kind of maintenance plan is usually recommended to really get longevity and value for money.</p>
