Painshill, Cobham
A beautiful landscape garden in Cobham featuring magical follies, historical plantings and pretty views.
Created in the 1700s by Charles Hamilton, Painshill landscape garden is a beautiful place to visit. It’s one of the finest remaining examples of an 18th-century English landscape park.
The gardens were created by Hamilton as a living painting – inspired by Renaissance art and his tours throughout Europe.
As a result, the 160-acre gardens at Painshill have been created with a sequence of breathtaking and surprising vistas. There’s a stunning man-made crystal grotto, and winding paths that take you to all corners, around and over a serpentine lake, and alongside vineyard plantings that produce sparkling wine. Most of the paths are paved, so Painshill is very accessible.
Throughout the year, there’s a busy programme of events from outdoor theatre to live music evenings, workshops and children’s events.
Dogs on short leads are welcome and you can bring a picnic – or visit Hamilton’s Tea Room.
There’s a gift shop too, where you can buy Painshill English Sparkling Wine and locally produced honey, as well as cards and other gifts.
