Tucked away down pretty country lanes in the village of Tandridge on the Greensand Ridge between Oxted and Godstone in Surrey, The Barley Mow is a picture-perfect traditional British pub. It doesn’t get much more quintessentially British than this!

Timber framed with a relaxed country décor that’s stylish and smart, there’s everything you expect (and more) from a classic country pub. We’re talking crisp white washed walls, timber beams, exposed stone open fireplaces with copper chimneys and cosy rugs on timber floors. Vintage leather chesterfield sofas are positioned by the open fireplaces, offering up the perfect spot for glass of red wine, and dining

But the jewel in crown of the Barley Mow – in the summer months, at least – has to be its large beer garden which wraps itself around the pub. The garden was revamped in 2022, so it’s looking mighty fine with a terraced dining area as well as grassy areas with spots in both the shade and the sun.

The food

Menus offer quality gastropub fare using British produce from local suppliers – think ribeye steak, fried snapper, pea, mint and asparagus risotto plus salads, pizzas, burgers and classics like fish and chips, sausage and mash and fish pie. And a pub wouldn’t be a pub without a Sunday roast, which the Barley Mow pulls off with aplomb. The wine list is extensive and interesting alongside craft beer, ales and the all-essential cocktails.

Central to the Barley Mow is the community, and there’s plenty happening here including quiz nights, live music, comedy events and theatre. The location is ideal for hikers, walkers (or runners if you’re feeling fit!) and cyclists – and there are several walks from the pub. Grab a coffee and fresh pastry before you set off – the coffee is from artisan coffee makers Union Hand-Roasted Coffee and pastries are handmade by Paul Rhodes Bakery.

Dogs and families are especially welcome at the Barley Mow, and there’s a decent-sized car park.

The Barley Mow is also available for private functions including weddings, school fairs, private dining and private parties.
