The Black Swan, Ockham
A beautifully refurbished country pub in Ockham with crackling fires, a standout garden and elevated modern British dishes – all served with laid-back local charm.

If you like your pubs with a dose of Surrey countryside and the promise of a crackling fire when the temperature drops (plus a rather glorious garden when it doesn’t), let me introduce you to The Black Swan in Ockham.
The Black Swan has long been a local favourite but it’s just had a full refurb inside and out – and it shows. The look now is very country-chic: think open fires, cosy corners, rustic textures and that relaxed, low-key polish that makes you instantly loosen your scarf and order a glass of something lovely.
It strikes that tricky balance between elevated and unfussy. The food is imaginative modern British – proper pub classics given a glow-up. There’s a curated wine list to match, and a brand-new spring/summer menu, full of seasonal, lighter dishes that feel made for longer days and second helpings. See the menu here.
And then there’s the garden. Come summer it’s one of Surrey’s smug little secrets. A large beer garden with a BBQ area, covered terrace, outdoor heaters and shady spots means it works just as well for a sunny rosé situation as it does for a brisk-but-bright Sunday lunch.
Dogs are welcome, the vibe is cosy and relaxed rather than shouty, and with a lively calendar of entertainment planned throughout the year, it feels like there’s always something going on.
The Black Swan in Ockham is a polished country pub that’s had a glow-up, but hasn’t lost its soul. Exactly what you want from your local – even if it’s not technically your local.
