The Watermill, Dorking

A chic country inn surrounded by history with some of the best views in Surrey

The Watermill tucked away in the tiny village of Pixham, near Dorking must be a contender for one of the most stylish pubs in the county. Given a serious glow-up in 2021, its interiors and gardens are giving us major design inspo and its enviable views overlooking Box Hill mean it looks just as good from the outside.

The pub’s foodie credentials are great too – as well as the usual pub classics with a twist the menu showcases more adventurous seasonal options. It’s the perfect place for social dining – think Mediterranean-inspired small plates and sharing boards plus pizzas.

The drinks range includes a fabulous cocktail menu including an excellent choice of non-alcoholic cocktails. And of course there’s also all-day artisan coffee, craft beers and an impressive wine list!

Outside, the gardens have been cleverly expanded to create lovely year-round seating with booths next to wood burners and fire pits and a stylish new terrace with views over the rolling Surrey Hills.

The village of Pixham houses a multitude of cultural gems that belies its small size;  the Grade II* listed church completed in 1901 was designed by acclaimed architect Edwin Lutyens and the attractive Grade II-listed mill complex, an important site of industry during the mid-19th century still stands in the village. Pixham was also the home of revered writer Daniel Defoe – author of Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders – widely considered to be the first novelist.

Whatever the reason for a visit The Watermill it’s a beautiful and historic setting for enjoying delectable traditional pub food including seasonal specials and relaxed Sunday lunches in stunning surroundings.
