Watts Gallery, Compton

A unique arts gallery and house in the heart of Surrey dedicated to the life of the Victorian-era artist G F Watts and his wife Mary.

A unique Arts & Crafts gem located in the village of Compton, near Guildford, Watts Gallery is dedicated to the life and work of ‘England’s Michelangelo’ G F Watts and his wife, the designer and artist Mary Watts.

Founded in 1904, as the only art gallery in the UK devoted to a single artist, the gallery, studio and house is a vibrant cultural hub inspiring audiences through their collection and exhibitions, programming, contemporary art projects and community engagement.

At Watts Gallery, you can discover stunning Victorian paintings and sculpture, find out more about the lives of G F and Mary Watts at Watts Studios, and tour of the artists’ home, Limnerslease.

There is also art for sale in the Watts Contemporary Gallery, along with a selection of gifts, books and homewares in the gift shop.

The magnificent Grade I-listed Watts Chapel, designed by Mary and created by the local community, is also nearby.

Watts Gallery regularly hosts workshops, courses and talks, and has a packed programme of family events, with something different to see and do every school holiday and The Make Space every Sunday (with fun arts and craft family activities to enjoy). Kids under 16 are free! Check the website for details.

As well as gorgeous gardens and grounds, there’s also a Tea Shop where you can treat yourself to lunch or cream tea.

The site is open daily the whole year round. An admission ticket is needed for Watts Gallery and Limnerslease: Artists’ Home, and includes admission to the temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Watts Cemetery Chapel, Watts Contemporary Gallery, and the Shop and Tea Shop are free. The surrounding grounds and gardens are also free to explore.
