Wotton House near Dorking is an impressive estate with a long and interesting history, and a long tradition of entertaining guests that continues today. It’s a great spot, whether it’s a country escape you seek… or a stunning backdrop to say ‘I do’.

The grand 17th-century house was once the home of the botanist John Evelyn who, spellbound by the Italian Renaissance gardens he had seen on his tours of Italy, constructed an Italian garden and temple. Designed by his cousin Captain George Evelyn, it was the first Italian garden in England, completed in 1652. A parterre garden complete with an Italian fountain soon followed. And these Grade II-listed gardens are still a beautiful feature at at the country estate today.

As a wedding venue, there’s a lot to offer at Wotton House. It’s no wonder Wotton House won the Muddy Award for Best Wedding Venue in Surrey in 2022.

A mix of original features and 21st-century style set the tone to create an exquisite backdrop for a wedding. If it’s wow-factor you’re after – this is the place to get it. You may choose to stage your wedding day amidst the beautiful Italian Gardens. Or perhaps, the ornate and elegant Old Library is your style with its vaulted ceilings, ornate pillars and original fireplaces. It’s a stunning space. Then, continue your celebrations in the light and airy Evelyn Suite, which has access to the gardens.

Sleep

There’s a collection of beautifully decorated bedrooms and suites – ideal for the wedding party, but also a great place for a relaxing country escape. Rooms are well equipped with writing desks, fluffy robes and slippers, vintage phones, and specially commissioned artwork inspired by the local history and gardens.

Eat

Dining is relaxed whether it’s a meal in the 1877 Restaurant – an Insta-worthy setting where an imposing olive tree takes centre stage – or a party for 200 with simple, unfussy yet delicious food. Afternoon tea is also on offer with a choice of traditional, Champagne, prosecco and gin teas. There’s also and afternoon tea for children.

Play

There are 13 acres of grounds, and the collection of Hunter wellies in the boot room means you can explore the Italian gardens, Roman temples and manicured lawns. Dogs are welcome at Wotton House and get the royal treatment with their own bed, bowls and treats. They’re welcome in the bar, but not in the 1877 Restaurant.

Guests can also unwind or workout at the Wotton House leisure club. There’s a range of facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, tennis court, studio for classes (yoga, pilates, spin, Tai Chi) and a fully equipped gym.
